This is really good. You should buy it.
Free Music Review: Nothing new, but it's great anyway Hit: 4 Stars
Well, I felt a little bit bad about not actually reviewing the album...you can find my original "review" below, where I make myself interesting by pointing out that this is not new material but rather a collection of previously released songs (with the exception of "The Sky Is Crying", an outtake from the "Couldn't Stand The Weather" sessions, but that one also appereared on the similarly titled album of outtakes issued after Vaughan's tragic death, although that was a different take). So if you're a tried and true SRV fan, you won't find anything new here...a live rendition of "Tin Pan Alley" doesn't really count. But if you only have, say, "Greatest Hits", this album would serve as a nice addition. It brings together ten slow blues tunes, many of which are among Stevie Ray Vaughan's finest recordings, like the soulful opener "Ain't Gonna Give Up On Love", a swaggering rendition of Guitar Slim's "The Things That I Used To Do", and the smouldering slow burner "Dirty Pool". The live "Tin Pan Alley" is top-notch as well. Lots of magnificent guitar playing, and an excellent, expressive vocal by Stevie Ray. His playing on "The Sky Is Crying" is equally superb, but if you've ever heard Elmore James' blistering original you'll probably find that Stevie Ray lacks a little bit of vocal power. If you haven't, you won't care one way or the other :o) Again, longtime fans will find nothing here which they don't already own, but more casual listeners should enjoy "Blues At Sunrise". The quality of the material assembled here is sky-high all the way through, and it is a great testament to Stevie Ray Vaughan's abilities on the guitar. Only reason I'm deducting a star is the fact that this is really just a re-packaging of already issued material. And the liner notes are kinda brief as well. But the music? Oh yeah, A+ from beginning to end.
Free Music Review: RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "ADJUST YOUR STEREO, BUT IT'S NOT SRV'S FAULT!" Hit: 4 Stars
If you know me, or have read any of my world famous blue's reviews, you'd have to wonder how I could rate anything by Stevie Ray under a five. Well, it's not SRV's fault or Shaq's. This is a digitally re-recorded CD that is not done well. It is not loud or clear. So to enjoy it, you better turn you stereo way, way up, and make sure when you're done, you turn it back down, or you will have a "FREAKIN" heart attack, when a regularly recorded CD plays. That being said, there is one song that should not be on this CD because it doesn't measure up to the company it's given, and that is #4 "Chitlins Con Carne". The rest are classic Stevie. What made me buy this CD, to add to my SRV collection was the 11-minute plus "Tin Pan Alley". As long as you accept the warning of the poor recording quality, and one song, that could have been replaced by any of 20 other SRV songs, I would say buy it.
Free Music Review: Stevie howls on the guitar and the mike. Hit: 4 Stars
I've been looking for a solid Stevie blues compilation and here it is. From unrealeased tracks to live performances, you get a great set of Stevie's best blues. Only 10 tracks, but you get lengthy jams that just make you cry. If you have Jimi Hendrix Blues and Eric Clapton's From the Cradle, this is a must for your collection. Not only do you get to hear the legendary guitar playing, but also you hear Stevie howl and wail on the mike. He really shows off his singing prowess in this CD much more than the others proving he's much more than a great guitarist. Unlike most CD's out, there is not one weak track here. If you're looking for great blues guitar/singing, you have to pick this CD up.
Free Music Review: For New Fans & Completists Only Hit: 4 Stars
Hard core SRV fans already own the few rare tracks on this disc, so you don't need it unless you are like me and need to own every release. For new fans this is an excellent first buy that highlights SRV at his best --slow burn blues. This is a fine compilation of one of the greatest guitar player/vocalists in modern blues. I am happy that Sony/Epic and Jimmie are finally releasing cuts only formerly available on boots, but I knocked off a star for the studio material duplication (the studio material has now been re-released four times in the last year alone in one form or another). More rare material could have been included.
