Free Music Notes for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble
Free Music Review: THE SRV BOX SET: PERFECT !/AWESOME !/SUPREME !/COULDN'T BE BETTER ! (not one single complaint from me)

Who is this 3-CD/1 DVD box set for? Hardcore fans, new fans, blues fans, anybody who loves SRV and his music, that's who! With about 75% of the songs being previously unreleased live material, plus the DVD and book, old fans will get something new to add to their SRV collections. And because most of Stevie's hits and fan favorites are included (in live versions and some in studio versions), the new fan will get everything that he really needs, too. The sound is all high quality.
Disc 1 covers 1977-83, and starts out with SRV's earliest recordings, including one from Paul Ray And The Cobras, which was before Stevie really reached his full potential, but could still play a pretty mean guitar. This disc also includes very good live versions of Texas Flood and Jimi Hendrix's Manic Depression, and the studio version of Pride And Joy from the album Texas Flood. This disc will be of special interest to fans who want to know more about Stevie's early days. I would describe the music on this disc as: First half - really good / Second half - really great!
Disc 2 covers 1984-87, and begins with studio versions of Scuttle Buttin' and Couldn't Stand The Weather from the album Couldn't Stand The Weather. A great live Hendrix medley of Little Wing/Third Stone From The Sun is here, as are two unreleased songs from the Live At Carnegie Hall show, The Sky Is Crying and Voodoo Chile (Slight Return). WOW! The music on this disc is just about what you would expect from this period in SRV's career. GREAT!
Disc 3 covers 1987-1990, and exceeds all of my expectations. THIS STUFF IS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! Included on this disc are great live versions of Look At Little Sister, Willie The Wimp, and Crossfire. And unbelievably good solo acoustic versions of Dirty Pool (from a 1989 Rock Lives' radio program), Rude Mood, Testify, and Pride And Joy (from MTV's Unplugged in 1990). Also from 1990 are smokin' live versions of Tightrope, Cold Shot, The Things (That) I Used To Do, and Leave My Girl Alone. Jeff Beck joins Stevie on Goin' Down, from an Albuquerque, New Mexico show in 1989. The music on this disc is the best of the best. I can't get enough of it!
Disc 4 is the DVD. It's an Austin City Limits broadcast from 1989 with about 5 songs. If you've never seen Stevie in action, this is the real thing, right here. He really cuts loose and gets wide open on this, and the picture quality is excellent. Having the visual SRV experience included in the box is a huge bonus.
The glossy long box digi-book packaging is compact and beautiful, and the 72-page book that's included is packed with great photos, history, recording details, and essays with comments from Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, B.B. King, Jeff Beck, and others. The last page of the book is an especially nice touch. A picture shows Stevie and his brother, Jimmie Vaughan, jamming away on their guitars, looking each other right in the eye, and smiling huge grins at each other. Next to the picture is a quote from Jimmie Vaughan: "The world misses his music, but I miss my brother".
And I don't have any complaints at all about this SRV box set.

This career-spanning box of three CDs and a DVD celebrates a legacy that looms larger than that of any blues-rocking guitarist since Jimi Hendrix. Despite fears that a series of posthumous releases had depleted the Stevie Ray Vaughan vaults, previously unreleased gems dominate the selection. Highlights extend from Vaughan's swaggering apprenticeship with Paul Ray and the Cobras to slash-and-burn concert performances from the final month of his life. There are obligatory dips into the songbooks of Hendrix and Buddy Guy, appearances on MTV Unplugged and Austin City Limits, and instrumental interplay with brother Jimmie Vaughan and tourmate Jeff Beck.
