Free Music Notes for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble: Greatest HitsFree Music Review: "Stevie Ray & D.T.'s best (1983 - 1989) & 1 rarity" Hit: 5 Stars
This 11 track compilation of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's best work from "Texas Flood (1983)" to In Step (1989)" is highly essential. All of his four studio releases for Epic records are represented here, as well as a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing" & the rare track "Taxman", originally by The Beatles. It's nice to have the tracks "Texas Flood", "Couldn't Stand the Weather", "Life Without You", and "Change It" collected on one convenient CD. Six great years of blues-based rock is represented here, and the inclusion of the radio staples "Crossfire" & "Pride & Joy" will surley make even the minor fans happy. NOTE: The import of this album, features three additional tracks: "Love Struck Baby", "Voodoo Chile (slight return) (hendrix)", & The Sky is Crying."
Free Music Review: Nice Compilation Hit: 5 Stars
Of course with any Greatest Hits compilation by any artist, people are going to fuss about songs left out and/or included. I think everyone will agree that every song on here deserves its place, though personally I think that omitting "Look at Little Sister" and "Love Struck Baby" leaves a big vacuum. Still, this CD does what it intends to do: showcases the absolutely uncanny talent of SRV. The man plays with more than just a feel for the guitar, he plays like he's channeling a higher spirit. All you have to do is take one listen to "Little Wing" where he fleshes out the Hendrix' tune, runs with it, and makes it his own.
I'd recommend this CD to someone who isn't all that familiar with SRV and wants to just jump in where the waters fine, or to anyone who wants a plum (tho compact) compilation. (Another plus is the pamphlet which gives great insight to each song by those who know.)
Free Music Review: SRV's music is not of mere mortals. Hit: 5 Stars
And Greatest Hits proves my point. Only Jimi Hendrix could pluck a string like he did, but not even he could play the blues like SRV. Listen to the breakneck speed of Pride and Joy, or the slow blues jam of Texas Flood. The jam of Little Wing is pure genious, taking a bit from Lenny of his debut album. When it came to playing blues, through adversity as well,Stevie Ray Vaughan has achieved a level of immortality. If you call yourself a true blues/rock fan don't go without this CD in your collection. In fact if you're a true blues/rock fan you shouldn't be without SRV period, end of discussion. So I also reccomend for beginners The Real Deal; Greatest Hits 2, Texas Flood, and Blues at Sunrise. Experienced SRV fans should buy this anyway in order to complete their collection with the unreleased Taxman.
Free Music Review: WOW! Great blues. Hit: 5 Stars
Living in rural Oregon and Idaho during the 1980's I missed Stevie Ray Vaughan. The only radio we could pick up was AM pop, or some insipid liberal talk. Serious blues was not played on AM radio. Then, in the mid-nineties, I discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan. WOW! What music! It was not since the West Coast Blues revival in the late sixties and early seventies that I have heard anything as good. Perhaps the best guitarist who ever lived, Stevie Ray Vaughan makes makes his guitar sing. Superlatives are not good enough to describe this music. Opening cut is George Harrisions Tax Man and mid-way through he plays Jimmy Hendrix's Little Wing. If you are unfamiliar with Stevie Ray Vaughan, buy this CD. You will not regret it.
