Pardon the pun but this album is STEVIE WONDER at his best! It is a true and total return to what made him the most dominant artist of the 1970's. The music here is catchy to the ear, melodic, funky, passionate, heartwarming and enjoyable yet has the incredible musicianhip and complexities that make Stevie a favorite of musicians. His vocals are outstanding. He hits notes that even this fan (I have everything he has ever released) has never heard him hit! He sounds in total control of his voice and is having fun doing it. His orchestrations (in a recent interview, he mentioned that this is what he loves to do) are phenominal and add so much texture and emotion. His arrangements and background vocals are on the money. The music is full and heavily arranged yet never cluttered. Everytime I hear the album, I hear something new! There are many songs that will become standards; "Moon Blue", "How Will I Know", True Love", "My Love Is On Fire", "Passionate Raindrops", "I Can't Imagine Love Without You" all will be covered by musicians and jazz artists for years. Some might not, but only because they are the kind of songs that ONLY Stevie can sing and make work. His voice and the chord changes and key changes that are handled so deftly by himself, are beyond many vocalists and musicians. The title songs is a duet with India Arie that should rank with "Living For The City" as one of his true classics of state of today! India's lyrics, the arragement (the strings and vocals) create a tension that is felt even without hearing the lyrics!
If there is any problem with this album, this is it- He makes his difficult music and voacls sound so commonplace and easy that many listeners of todays simpliied music won't fully appreciate what he has done here. This album ranks with his best of "Innervisions", Talking Book", Fulfillingness'" and "Songs In The Key Of Life" and, therefore, makes it's place as one of the best pop albums of not only this year but of modern music!
