Free Music Review: Very solid

You know how for the most part you can depend on Wonder ballads being highlights? Not necessarily here. Because as amazing as the quiet-storm slow jam "I'm New" is (and it is amazing, especially the synthesizer solo), "Taboo to Love" is "Lately" without the feeling. And the funk... well, you can just depend on Stevie's funk being spectacular. And it is: how else am I gonna describe propulsive numbers like "Rain Your Love Down", "Edge of Eternity", "My Love is With You", and "Sensuous Whisper"? He even sneaks fireworks into "My Love is With You"! And the sound of an answering machine! Plus he can still write unbelievable melodies, and play a mean harmonica ("Treat Myself"). I do think he tries too hard in places, incorporating hip-hop rhythms on the last three tracks, none of which really work out in spite of the last one's earnest pacifist lyrics; the calypso experiment "Tomorrow Robins Will Sing" isn't much better. But this is literally twice as good as its predecessor, Characters (released a mere eight years beforehand). It also proves that Characters was his only misstep as a serious artist, and that the eight years he put into it were worthwhile. Good!
