in late 1981,the brilliant stevie wonder released the sparkling, crystal, shinning, hard driving explosive lovesong of his career:'THAT GIRL'/this lovejam just blew me away the first time that i heard it as a 17 year old back in the late fall of 1981.i immediately bought the single because it is so powerful.stevie is essentially a oneman band in this killer jam.he played the drums, harmonica, fender rhodes, piano, synthesizers and of course his amazing legendary voice.the classic 1981 THAT GIRL track a cut that describes wonder's hot desire 4 a woman that every man wants because her love is so full of rapture and sensuality.in the song, wonder wonder desires her intensely with passionate lyrics:that girl thinks that she's so fine/that soon she'll have my mind/that girl thinks that she's so smart/that soon she'll have my heart/she thinks in no time flat/she'll be free and clear to start/with her emotional rescue of love that you'll leave torn apart....midway thru this jam, wonder desires her even more:before i tell her that i love her/that i want her/that my mind, soul and body needs her/in that i want to that i need to doall that i have to be in her love.....i've been hurting for a long time/and you've been playing for a long time/you know it's true/you've been holding for a long time/and you've been running for a long time/it's time to do for what we have to do....that girl, that girl.....stevie's incredible sparkling harmonica solo and hard driving drum beat enhances the song into a legendary legacy that is of stevie wonder.
after hearing 'that girl' as the lead off 1981 single from the forthcoming album entitled 'stevie wonder's original musiquarium I' i couldn't wait 2 hear the next new songs from this greatest hits retrospective that focuses on phase two of his remarkable career from 1972-1982 when wonder took control of artistic freedom of his career in 1971 after the release of his criminally ignored 1971 classic album entitled 'where i'm coming from' which was wonder's first true artistic statement concept album that motown could not deal with because of it's strong social and political content.my sweet mother bought me 'stevie wonder's original musiquarium I' album in the summer of 1982 4 me while i was still in my teens.i was happy that the album was a greatest hits of his 2nd 'new era' phase of his career.just months after this double album was released, stevie was on tour with other r&b legends at the budweiser superfest in the summer of 1982 when i saw him live in concert.i also bought a rare poster print of stevie at this concert of which stevie had his thumbprint and also,he had handwritten his first real name 'stevland' right next to his thumbprint on this 1982 poster print.
'stevie wonder's original musiquaruim I'is a classic double album of material from his seventies to early eighties glory,a snapshot of sparkling highlights from 1972-1980 from the albums 'music of my mind'/'talking book'/'innervisions'/'fulfillingness'first finale'/'songs in the key of life'/'stevie wonder's journey through the secret life of plants'/'hotter than july' which was then glossed over with 4 new songs:'front line'(1982)/'ribbon in the sky'(1982)/'that girl'(1981)/'do i do'(1982)....wonder craftedly chose his selections with patience and care and gave us we as fans something extra including the 4 new songs of soon 2 be wonder classics.when i listened 2 this album,it was legend on how wonder had each new song on the original album/lp/vinyl release as the last cut on the original double vinyl album.the way stevie compiled the album is genius which still makes it a true concept album.and it is also genius on how wonder stringed this classic compilation together of which the songs flow together and how they blend into one another non-stop,because there is no silence between the tracks-they flow into one another perfectly.
side one of the original double album release has wonder's hard cutting edge message songs such as 'superstition'/'you haven't done nothing'/'living for the city' and the then new all out hardrock funk classic 'front line' in which wonder delivers an angry vocal about seeing himself as a young blackman who joins the united states army back in 1964 who fights 4 america, comes home after the war parading his purple heart amongst his black brothers back in the 'hood as they inform him 2 quit bragging 'bout the war that he'd been in and in the process,he finds no justice at home as a blackman in america after the vietnam atrocity as wonder details harshly:they had me standing on the front line, they had me standing on the front line/but now i stand at the back of the line when it comes to gettin'ahead...they gave me a uniform and a tiny salty pill/to stop the big urge i might have for the wrong kind of thrill/they put a gun in my hand and said,''shoot until he's dead!''/brought up in church taught no man should take another's life/but then put in a jungle where life has no price...back in the world the paper reads today another war is in the brewing/but what about the lives of yesterday/and the many happy families that have been ruined/i walk the neighborhood parading my purple heart/with a fear of agent orange that no one will stop!!!....
the song is wonder's harsh indictment of america's hypocrisy of having the blackman fight in a useless senseless war of either being killed or disabled and then the blackman has 2 endure another fight 2 get justice at home in america when returning from vietnam.'front line'is another one of those classic wonder songs that is ignored.i rank it near the top as one of wonder's greatest funkrock blasting achievements.stevie's killer synthesizer solo on 'front line' rivals any killer guitarist's solo on record.stevie's killer synthesizer solo on 'front line' is simply put one of the baddest killer solo synthesizer attacks in music.i always turn the volume up on this 'front line' funk cut when wonder blasts his synthesizer solo at the song's hardfunkrock conclusion.
romance is the theme of side two from the original lp release, which features a sample of wonder's classic seventies lovesongs such as 'superwoman(where were you when i needed you)'/'send one your love'/'you are the sunshine of my life'and the then new loveballad 'ribbon in the sky'/'ribbon in the sky'the beautiful loveballad which features wonder's beautiful jazz piano playing and classic vocals with an opening hypnotic love chorus that sets the tone of romantic love:oh so long for this night i prayed/that a star would guide you my way/to share with me this special day/where a ribbon's in the sky for our love...and then there's that beautiful video that accompanies the song, which begins in a quiet peaceful setting inside of a house with calm winds blowing the curtains as sunlight frames the mood with wonder cool breezing at the piano.other images of the video shows wonder on a cruise ship letting fly a ribbon from his hand 2 a pretty ebony ballerina lady who is doing beautiful graceful ballerina dance moves amongst a backdrop of beautiful dark moving clouds and sparkling sunlight as she dances with grace, beauty and elegance as she is the ribbon of stevie's heart in the video.
side three from the original album vinyl release has three uptempo numbers from wonder's seventies period such as 'higher ground'/'sir duke'/'boogie on reggae woman'and one of his early eighties uptempo numbers 'master blaster(jammin')which is wonder's reggae funk tribute 2 the legendary bob marley.'that girl' was the then new funky cut that concluded side three.'that girl'showcased one of wonder's most awesome, passionate, dramatic vocal and oneman band musical performances on record in his legendary career.side four of the original album/lp/vinyl release has two more seventies upbeat classics 'i wish'/'isn't she lovely'-both cuts are from wonder's classic 1976 double album opus 'songs in the key of life'/'do i do'was the then final new and last song of this double album retrospective.'do i do' an upbeat lovesong of happy sunshine with wonder expressing how his heart melts when seeing the woman of his dreams:when i see you on the street/my whole body gets weak/when you're standing in a crowd/your love talks to me so loud/girl-do i do what you do,when i do my love to you...
the song also features wonder's rap midway through the song and he also introduces the legendary jazz trumpeter dizzy gillespie on his album.the song also features a great bass line by nathan watts.'do i do'is 10 minutes and 27 seconds long, long enough 2 get your groove on and it's unique fade when all of the instruments fade out as wonder speaks of a 5 second countdown 2 end the song and album.the accompanying video 2 the song matches the mood of the song as a crowd of people join wonder on a dance floor.the 'do i do' video also takes us 2 the motherland of africa as their dance rhythms grooves 2 wonder's sound.'stevie wonder's original musiquarium I'(1972-1982)is a retrospective reflective of wonder's genius leaving us as fans wanting more of his legendary sound of music.wonder said it best about this collection when he made a statment on the back of the original vinyl release:''i see the past as only a positive challenge to the future''...stevland morris
Original Musiquarium I PosterThis 16-song set presents the hits Wonder scored after he negotiated artistic control for himself in the 1970s. It's a wondrous collection, ranging from the driving pop-funk of "Superstition" and the streetwise "Living for the City" to the sweet "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," now a pop standard. In addition to the hits, Musiquarium includes four great new songs, two of which ("Do I Do" and "That Girl") would go on to become hits soon enough. In the years since this set was originally released, Wonder's output has been spotty at best, but Musiquarium reminds us that Stevie Wonder is a giant of soul and pop. --David Cantwell
