Free Music Notes for Stevie Wonder - The Definitive CollectionFree Music Review: Just When You Thought It Was Over... Hit: 2 StarsIf you thought that the 1999 release of the excellent four disc boxed set "At The Close Of A Century" would finally put an end to the diarrhea - like flow of Stevie Wonder greatest hits, best of's, etc., think again. Three years after "ATCOAC" was released comes the single disc, 21 track "The Definitve Collection".
What this cd has is basically some of Stevie's most recognizable number, arranged in chronological order. These songs are all among the finest pieces of music ever written, from "Fingertips" to "Living For The City" to "I Just Called To Say I Love You" (yes, I know the last has been maligned amount a million times, but I feel it's a great song). The fact is that there is not enough of the good stuff. The producers tried to appeal to some hardcore fans by including the relatively unknown "Hey Love", which is inexplicable. They should have left this one off to included maybe two or three minutes more of "Do I Do" (which is inexplicably edited from ten minutes and twenty seven seconds to five minutes and four seconds).
This cd is aimed at casual fans, but it doesn't even do them justice. I you're a beginning fan of Stevie, then "At The Close Of The Century" is the best place to start. However, if you're on a tight budget or just don't feel ready to be exposed to so much Stevie in one dosage, I recommend the two disc "Song Review", which is a far better representation despite inexplicably (and I know I've used that word a lot) leaving off "Fingertips", "For Once In My Life" and "You Haven't Done Nothing" and editing a number of tracks (though it does include the full version of "Do I Do"), or if you just want his groundbreaking 1970s' material, "Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium" will suit you well (though by leaving out the 1960s' and post - 1982 material, you're missing a big chunk of the Wonder legacy).
The bottom line is, if you want the best of Stevie, search other venues, such as the boxed set or just seeking out the original albums. Anything but this piece of junk (again no disrespect to the music).
(Note: I just want to say that I don't actually own this album. However, I have heard evry song on here, and know them well enough to write a review for this cd).
Free Music Review: great stevie but missing a few of my favorites Hit: 4 StarsThis is a wonderful c.d. but the man had so many great hits there is just no way that you can fit them all on one c.d. so I was a little upset to find out some of my favorites were not included
Free Music Review: BUY THE DOUBLE IMPORT CD INSTEAD Hit: 4 StarsThis Definitive Collection is available in a double import CD form. It's a much better overall collection than the single domestic CD, however I agree with the reviewer who noted the sound quality could be better on the older tracks. Also, if you don't already own it, pick up Fullfillingness First Finale.
Free Music Review: Too "ambitious" a title! Hit: 4 StarsPerhaps, this should've been entitled "A Collection of WONDERful Hits" for this is far short of a "definitive" compilation. The edited "Do I Do" is certainly a letdown.
However, for one that is looking for a small sampling of the legend's music, then this will fare until one can afford to buy the more superlative four-disc "At the Close of the Century".
Free Music Review: Soul Definitions Hit: 4 StarsThere are just so many people right now that are just into manufactured artists that really don't seem to have a very well put sense of definitive music into the mainstream. From so many acts that are just overexposing the image, and not letting the music speak for itself, it makes acts like Ashanti and Britney Spears just look like they're garbage. Yet, with so much of the younger generation not reflecting upon older R&B acts, that generation is close to fading away. Still there are some acts that've defined R&B like Stevie Wonder. Since he came out in the 60's, his music has absolutely remained a timeless piece of treasure that has continued to make thousands of people very delighted. Yet, as for greatest hits collections, they always have something missing.
Stevie Wonder: The Definitive Collection consists of 21 great tracks that Stevie made into great pop songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's. All of the songs here were remastered beautifully and sound much better than they were released years ago. The collection includes great classic including Do I Do, Uptight, I Just Called To Say I Love You, Overjoyed and You Are The Sunshine Of My Life. All of the standards are well featured here, but there are a few tracks that were just overshadowed from this collection like As, Isn't She Lovely, For Your Love, Go Home, Skeletons and others. Most of these were the same tracks overlooked before from his 1996 Song Review double-album collection.
While so much more could've been improved on this collection, Stevie Wonder's longtime fans might overlooking this record in favor of Song Review, or the well-recieved 1999 box set At The Close Of The Century. Yet, this collection is a real delight for anybody who hasn't heard what real soul looks and sounds like. Stevie Wonder's The Definitive Collection is a very well put standard record.
