Free Music Review: Still a classic unknown

I have to agree with those who say this album still kicks after 10+ years. Stompbox WAS the Boston sound as far as I'm concerned. I will always regret not seeing them live when I had the chance. They had their own sound and every song just punches you in the chest. Even when I haven't listened to Stress for a couple of years, I always fin myself hearing the songsd in my head and out comes the CD again.
I found one of the band members back a few years ago and emailed him. Here's what he had to say:
yes, i was the ********* from stompbox. your appreciation is much... er,
appreciated! as you can see, i have a way with words.
unfortunately, stompbox only put out a few 7" singles, an ep called travis,
and stress. travis was more of a demo than an ep, since most of the
material got rerecorded for stress. it was a limited 7 song tape(!)
release. (these were the days before cds were cheap to make and our label
at the time were total tightwads) probably interesting to hear if you've
never, uh, heard it.
after stompbox: we kicked out the singer (erich) because we were tired of
his homeboy/cookie monster shtick.
we then had a roadie sing for some shows but he was more interested in
drawing tatoos and roadie-ing. i think he went on to tour with tree and
then clutch.
we next decided to have our bassist, pat, sing. we also added an additional
bassist, mikey welsh (who was, until recently, in weezer). the music of
that band sounded quite a bit different than stompbox (2 basses, more noisy,
heavy and fast), so we changed the name to slower (a play on slayer). we
toured the country twice with no release, recorded live on wmbr and broke
up. collapsed under our own weight, if you will. (we were getting really
fat)"
So, there is the brief history of Stompbox. A real shame if you ask me. I will always cherish this record. Stompbox, you are missed.
