Free Music Notes for StressFree Music Review: A complete gem that will never get its due regard Hit: 5 Stars
So yeah...like most that have commented on this, I was introduced to this in the mid nineties. The friend that recommended this also recommended Korn (when only their first cd was out btw), Life Of Agony, and Pro-pain. I was looking for some really good hard driving metal-rock goodness.
This is one of those one shot cd's from a band that we will never hear from again. And yes, it is a pity. I read on net a while back (trying to find out why these guys never put out more stuff) that apparently they were dropped from Sony, and the singer with maybe one or two of the other Stompbox members started a new band - Slower.
But I have never found anything on them....ever.
This is the very first review I have ever put on Amazon, I was listening to Stress, and thought I'd try one last time to see if I could find anything on Stompbox and/or Slower.
I feel obligated to share my review and to (hopefully) entice anyone looking for great music of this genre (Grundge/Metal) to partake in its greatness.
If you like really good hard rock-metal, (like C.O.C, Filter, Crowbar, etc...) and (more importantly) you like no frills - straight ahead driving rock and roll with no artifice , do yourself a favor. Get this.
Just....get it.
It's a damn good album, and chances are, it won't be in print forever. Buy it while you can.
And this is another one of those great bands and albums that never got or ever will get the attention it deserves. I don't know anyone personally that even knows anything about this band.
SO .... to own and to appreciate it, makes you a member of an unfortunately small group.
Do yourself a favor. Join.
And...an un-official "HAts-Off" to the guys in Stompbox.
Great job boys...wish there was more of your music to enjoy.
Free Music Review: Boston's underground musical roots at their finest ! Hit: 5 Stars
There are few releases out there where every track hit's you in a positive way - "Stress" is one of those few releases. I was introduced to Stompbox amidst the early 90's when Big Wig [NOT the NJ Punk band], Scissorfight, 6L6 and Sam Black Church were the kings of Bean-town. I was 15 at the time, on my way to a part time job with a cassette player and this release on hand. Stompbox is a unique sonic assault on the ears, the frequent patches of rhythm will no doubt get your head moving and you can't help but wail out the vocals along with the chorus sections. "Stress" DOES NOT disappoint. At times I find it an extremely sad affair when local acts get nothing more than local recognition and the cheers of those few outsiders who can't see these bands so easily on a regular basis or trek right down the street to see them tear the stage apart. While Columbia picked up Stompbox and the band ended for whatever reason - the true roots rock/metal ear candy is usually shunned away to usher in a cleaner, radio friendly, medicated sound - no thanks - give me a band that plugs in, tunes up, records and releases exactly what they created and not what the studio releases after the extensive editing process. Any and all Boston acts will always get the highest respect from this listener. Recommended listening along with "Stress" and the bands I mentioned above: Honkeyball, Blood For Blood, Ducky Boys, Sinners & Saints, Tree, Slughog, Only Living Witness, RocketSled, Point .04, NOK, Wrath A.D., Vile, etc. Listen....the number of bands that originate from Boston is immense - if you're in the area, stop by the Middle East Downstairs in Cambridge [3 minutes from M.I.T. and 10 minutes away for you future law students contemplating Harvard], on any given night the cover charge will pay for itself. Lataz !
Free Music Review: Stombox "Stress" Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this after I had heard the song from a friend in the 90s... And I wore the grooves off this baby (for you younger folks its a "vinyl" thing you may not understand. And it was actually a CD but...). This thing was in my CD played for most of a year. After a nasty divorce she took my CD collection and could never find this again. Then the other day I was telling my son about some groove laden music and found a couple videos on youtube. Man I love this CD from beginning to end this thing is probably one of the best albums from that period. Since I have got it I have probably listened to it 2-3 times a day from start to finish. Love this stuff and I wish Stompbox would get it back together and show these new metal bands how its done..... 10 out of 10 in my books check this out fore sure!
Free Music Review: Some aren't so lucky. Hit: 5 Stars
I got a free promotional cassette from Sony back in 94 while working at a record store. Instantly fell in love with the band. Seem them at the hemp fest on the Boston Common with Sam Black Church, 454 Big Block and Letters to Cleo, if my memory serves me. This is just one of those bands, that for some reason or another, just didn't make it. They got some radio play and push by Sony, but just weren't lucky to sell enough albums to please Sony, thus dropped. Such a shame. Of course I heard the singer got quite the large ego too, thus thrown out. If they stayed together and toured extensively, I bet they would of been big. Anyways, Saltpeterexitwound still gives me goosebumps and makes my top 10 list of my favorite all time songs.

This is one of the best hard rock cd's of the early-mid 90's, right up there with Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, etc. etc. - very solid from start to finish. I thought these guys were 1 step above the rest of those great boston rock bands at the time..Sam Black Church, Tree, etc. Not rocket science on this album, just very tight hooky guitar band with a unique growling lead singer that has suprisingly good melodies. it's just ashame this is their only major release. A+ in my book, I've owned this for about 10 years...and it still seems fresh every time I listen to it. The Boston scene is not what is used to be...but there is one hard rock band left that rules New England presently - Scissorfight.
