Free Music Review: STP is back in a very big way!
Hit: 5 Stars

After a short break between albums, STP comes back with their best one yet! This album is no short of amazing. It seems Scott's vocals are the most polished they've ever been, and Dean's guitar playing is definitely at the top of it's game. Not to mention Robert and Eric's rhythym punch! The songwriting is truly excellent. WOOHOO!!!

Dumb Love-10/10-THE best opener STP has ever done by far. Opens up the album with an undeniable explosion! Low growling vocals and guitar during the verses turning into an excellent chorus. Great lyrics. I'm happy to say that Scott really found inspiration on this album. No. 4 was mostly strung together phrases that made no sense, but it's all fixed on this album. Awesome guitar solo. As I said, Dean really shines in this album. Great song!

Days Of The Week-9/10-This is probably the only track on the album that would sound good on radio. It's great, but it's a little light. There's nothing too groundbreaking here. But there's a great hook and the lyrics are great. The slow section smack dab in the middle of the song also sounds great.

Coma-10/10-Don't be scared of this song. It's quite the monster. It starts out with a techno sound, and switches off during the verses with the techno and hard rock guitar, it creates an awesome effect. The pre chorus really gets you built up for the chorus, and it really has a great effect. The chorus is absolutely pristine, with all the elements of the song coming together in perfect harmony. There's also an interesting slow section again in the middle of the song that builds up to the awesome guitar solo. The music is so great here, along with the lyrics. Such a great song.

Hollywood Bitch-9/10-This could come right off of Tiny Music, whereas all the other songs so far sound like No. 4. It's a great break. Scott's vocals are great again here. Fairly hard rock verses and a cool Beatlesque chorus. The lyrics are pretty basic, but they're still good.

Wonderful-10/10-Wonderful indeed. The verses are acoustic and beautiful along with Scott's voice. The pre-chorus is what makes the song however, when Scott sings "Must be moving on", it's basically the high moment of beauty in the song. Great slide guitar solo that fits with the acoustics in the background. This one could probably hold up on radio too :)

Black Again-9/10-This song is Beatlesque, especially during the verses. Even the vocals sound like an English invasion song. The chorus is great though, with melodic vocals and slide guitar. Might I mention the lyrics. These do not sound like Weiland. There uplifting!!! It just shows how much the boys have grown since Core.

Hello It's Late-9/10-More Beatle influences. The song is very trippy and beautiful. It sounds like it was recorded in a smoky room with candles lit. Probably a good relationship song since the lyrics are about Mary, Scott's wife. There's even some good piano action in this one. Great song.

Too Cool Queenie-9.2/10-I gave this a 9.2 because it's better than nine, but not quite 9.5. Oh well, it's just a great song. The lyrics are directly pointed at Courtney Love, trashing her, saying that she didn't help Kurt Cobain in his depression, maybe even causing it, saying that that she was only in it for the money. I'm sure there will be some controversy over this ditty. Great guitar solo, great melodic rock song.

Regeneration-9/10-I fall in and out of complete love for this song. It's got a trippy feel to it, but it's completely hard rock. It's really hard to describe. The choruses really rock hard. It's a great song. Sounds almost like a cross between No Way Out on No. 4 and something from Tiny Music. There's a cool spoken word/rap? section, but Weiland actually "raps" with style. Fred Durst should take notes. Anyways it's a great song, give it a good hard listen, you'll either love it or hate it.

Bi-Polar Bear-9/10-Wonderfully weird song. The verses are so mournful it's almost enough to bring tears to my eyes. They're so trippy yet melodic. Another song that's hard to describe. The only thing I don't like about this song is the chorus, the vocal doesn't sound good. But the verses are just so wonderful. The lyrics by the way are about Scott's drug addiction and how it affected his everyday life. The guitar solo is awesome, it may have my vote as Dean's best. It's just an amazing solo. The outro solo and riff is beatiful. Another song that really requires a listen.

Transmissions From A Lonely Room-8/10-Okay. This album is not easy on the reviewer. Well, the verses are standard. They really don't grab you. They're actually kind of boring and there's an annoying twang in the background (Robert playing sitar). But the choruses scream for attention, there's great high pitch vocals, and it sounds like some classic rock song I can't think of. But it still holds it's own as a whole song.

A Song For Sleeping-9.5/10-Wow. Weiland wrote a song about his son. This is unlike STP. They've grown up. There's nobody who can put a simple love song about his son into such a great lyrical form. There's wonderful vocal harmonies in this song. My mother was crying when she heard this song if that tells you anything. It's so weird to hear Weiland sing about his son. When he says "I pour the coffee" you almost think that he should be singing "When I shoot the heroin, or drink the beer", but I say way to go Scott. If anybody thinks he's gone soft, they obviously don't know how bad a drug addiction can be, especially when you have a family. I'm happy for you Weiland.

Long Way Home-7.5/10-The albums weakest link comes at the end. It's in no way a bad song, it just plods during the verses, with a boring slow tempo. It doesn't sound bad, it's just boring. The choruses are Beatlesque again, and they're not bad. The song just isn't my cup of tea. It would have been better if they ended the album with A Song For Sleeping and put this one as a b-side or something. Despite ending on an average note, this is still an excellent album, the best album STP has ever done by far. If you're hesitating on buying this album, stop hesitating, speed to the record store, and get it!!!

Shangri-La Dee Da Poster

Japanese edition of their 2001 studio album. Includes bonus CD-ROM video footage from the Malibu Villa. The video is described as 'while recording the album , we made some home videos to three songs', 'Days of the Week', 'Hollywood Bitch' & 'Wonderful'.
Shangri-La Dee Da may not be STP's most commercial outing, but the disc's 13 tracks comprise a satisfying aural journey despite its lack of quick-fix hits along the lines of "Sex Type Thing" and "Wicked Garden." From the dark, grinding rhythms and obfuscated vocals of "Dumb Love" to the lovely "Wonderful" to the buoyant power pop of "Days of the Week" to the edgy and disturbing "Coma," myriad facets of the lineup's musical temperament are explored. "Bi-Polar Bear" hints at STP's humor, though Shangri-La is by no means lightweight; singer Scott Weiland's passionate and personal lyrics--especially on a touching ode to his infant son, "A Song for Sleeping"--are affecting and apt. The fifth outing from this California crew who've survived grunge and thrived in its aftermath is masterful and mature effort from a band who've spied some light at the end of their tunnel. --Katherine Turman
