This disc is an absolute must for anyone interested in music, period. Among Karajan's many recordings of Richard Strauss, these three are perhaps the best (barring the Rosenkavalier), and all three of them are benchmark performances of the work in question (The Vier letzte Lieder depending, admittedly, on what kind of voice you prefer). Tod und Verklärung is more powerful and dramatic than most, and more refined and dazzlingly colorful than any alternative account I have heard. It is one of those magic Karajan moments where attention to detail and strive for fulsome splendor of orchestral sound doesn't compromise ferocity or dramatic effect - the later Karajan often failed to achieve this synthesis, but this is one of the cases where he did, and stunningly so. The recording is also fabulous, with vivid presence and transparence.

Janowitz's Vier letzte lieder has achieved classic status, but as the rich, angelic voice rather than the dramatic voice or the voice with clearly defined and purposeful musical phrases. I like it, but I wouldn't throw away Scwarzkopf or Flagstad, for instance. She has the benefit, though, of a superb Berlin Philharmonic on their very best form, giving performances that are wonderfully shaped by Karajan. This version of Metamorphosen clears the field, however. That no other performance I've heard challenges it in terms of sheer opulence is one thing, but the depth of the drama, the urgency, the subtle nuances of the textures and, not the least, the formal cohesion and clear musical lines are what drives this version to the top of the pile; wonderful.

As should be clear from the above - this disc is a must if any is; benchmark performances in what is still quite superb sound, if a little close, perhaps, in the Metamorphosen.
