Free Music Review: Surf Film Review: 'Stylemasters' Sets Bar

Shot in the late 70s, the film captures the shortboard revolution on the North Shore, featuring the era's best: Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell, Vince Klein, Larry Bertlemann, Mark Lidell, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, Michael Ho, Cheyne Horan and others.
As surf history, the film is irreplacable, nailing firsts including Buttons pulling a backside 360 on a single fin. More important to Spat, it's an exploration of Super 8's limits in terms of clarity, color and contrast.
Spyder Wills' shorebound footage and Greg Weaver's water work puts the audience into the action in a way that erases awareness that Super 8 images occupy 23.76 square millimeters per frame. Super 8 fanatics are fit to drool over the clarity of the Backdoor Pipe sequence at 34:12, the Pipeline beach shots at 28:18 and the board-cam footage at 27:19. The retrospective narration of Weaver and Wills pounds in the understanding that they were there and they were a part of it. The film contextualizes that time in the history of North Shore surfing at a level that surf nerds won't find insulting. Less obsessive fans would benefit from a little wind up, telling the story of what came before and how the period set the stage for what came next in terms of performance surfing.
Buttons and Bertlesmann deservedly get credit for doing things on paleo surf technology that even today's aerial masters must goggle at. Put Buttons on a thruster and watch him hold a master's class exhibition for today's best. To wit ... at 38:04 in Stylemasters, Buttons is centered in a water shot coming down the line, deep in the barrel. He squirts under the curtain, cuts at the bottom and pulls a 360 off the lip.
It's staggering surfing, and staggering photography. Without Weaver and Wills, it's lost to time. So yeah: Stylemasters may not provide all the remedial backgrounding that Dana Brown would have included, but it freezes history and delivers stoke three decades forward.
