Free Music Review: Women, Children, Rejoice! Set your eyes forth, Behold!
Hit: 5 Stars

Sufjan Stevens is a man of his word. Two years after the debut of his '50 States' project in Greetings from Michigan, with a -gasp- unrelated album in between (Seven Swans), Illinois hits the shelves. Fans of his genre-dabbling folk slash everything style are rejoicing.

As a second installment of a ridiculously ambitious project (50 friggin albums! He'll die first), Illinois is a natural complement to Michigan.

Sufjan approached Illinois as much with a historian's lens as with his storyteller's voice, covering 200 years of the state's history, notable personas, and quirky achievements spread out over 75 minutes.

Sufjan has a way of channeling the raw sentiment of his subject matter. As a result, Illinois is very personal. Intimate character sketches like "John Wayne Gacy" and "Casimir Pulaski Day," are both delicate folk tunes that highlight Sufjan's talent as a storyteller.

But Sufjan has many many tricks up his sleeve, and the attention to detail to pull it off. Illinois is a dense, intricate collection of songs that are well conceived and painstakingly arranged. Mr. Stevens shows off his versatility by playing a long list of instruments and dabbling in many styles. It's enough to make an indie-lover cry with joy.

As a whole, Illinois flows like a documentary film score. Each song is another scene, another snapshot of Americana, Illinois-style. The album opens up slowly with a short, soft piano ballad about a UFO sighting that segues into building waves of instruments.

When the floutists are bellplayers are warmed up in Rogers and Hammerstein fashion, the album picks up where Michigan left off "Come on, Feel the Illinoise", picks up the place with a skippy 5/4 rhythm.

There are literally too many good songs on this album to spotlight in this short space, but my favorites are:
"Jacksonville", "the Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders", "Decatur", "Chicago", "The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts", "They are Zombies!!"

48 more albums to go. That means of mountains of research for Sufjan, and a whole lifetime of amazing music for the rest of us.
