Free Music Review: Pop/punk at it's very best
Hit: 5 Stars

I originally heard of Sugarcult from an Amazon.com friend. I listened to the sound samples and I didn't really like it that much. So, of course I then blew them off and continued to surf. Later, I saw this CD in a friend of mine's collection. I popped it in and my mouth fell to the floor because I LOVED IT! I liked it so much that my friend gave it to me! So please DO NOT TRUST THE SOUND SAMPLES. I repeat DO NOT TRUST THE SOUND SAMPLES. It's not uncommon for amazon.com to do this but they sound kinda different than the actual CD. However, it is especially true with this one. So if you like the sound samples ant least a little bit, you will LOVE this CD. It is extremely diverse. In fact, it's probably the most diverse CD I have other than "Lechuza" by Fenix TX. It jumps from one sound to the next but without creating tons of cr@ppy songs along the way. Here is a song by song description of each track.

1. You're The One: A very Ramones sounding song. Only better recording quality and a lot more polished. The lyrics (especially the chorus) are honestly catchier than anything I have ever heard before. Despite the praise, I don't think it should have been made track 1.

2. Stuck In America: Clearly the best song on this CD. This is the one that should have been track one. An absolute jaw dropping song with highly entertaining and fun lyrics. This is the song that I was introduced to the CD with and it is pure brilliance. Fenix TX and Sum41 fans are guaranteed to absolutely love this song.

3. Hate Every Beautiful Day: A pop/punk song with a heavy rock and metal influence. Actually it sounds a lot like Finch! This is my second favorite song on the CD.

4. Bouncing Off The Walls: A song that sounds very similar to "Motivation" by Sum41 song about being hyper-active. Since I have A.D.D I can't help but laugh at this song.

5. Saying Goodbye: A rad song that sounds a lot like "Stuck in America".

6. Daddy's Little Defect: A very simple sounding song that I don't really know how to describe.

7. Lost In You: A very poppy song with lyrics that will no doubt make all the 12 year old girls say "awwwwwwww... how sweet".

8. Pretty Girl (The Way): A pop/punk song with an extremely heavy Deftones and maybe even Korn influence. The lyrics are an effort to warn all girls about seductive guys that are really total jurks.

9. Crashing Down: An upbeat song with very little guitar and mostly just vocals. The vocals remind me a lot of something Eve6 would do. It's not all that great.

10. How Does It Feel: Now we are back to the harder stuff. This is probably the hardest song on the CD. It sounds a lot like a cross between "Stuck in America" and "Daddy's little Defect".

11. I Changed My Name: An upbeat song with very little guitar and mostly just vocals. The vocals remind me a lot of
something Eve6 would do. It's not all that great. There is also an unlisted track after this. However, it's just a really bad ballad.
Peace.

Start Static Poster

"Start Static" is Sugarcult's quintessential debut, originally released in August 2001. It delivered three smash radio singles: "Bouncing Off The Walls", "Stuck In America", and "Pretty Girl (The Way)", three music videos, and sold 350,000 copies. "Pretty Girl" has had recent play on MTV's "Laguna Beach" show, skyrocketing online sales from 300 per week to over 8,000 per week. The band has toured several times with Green Day, Blink 182, and Jimmy Eat World. With the November 15th release of "Back To the Disaster - A Film About Sugarcult" DVD, now is the perfect time to replenish stock on this title. The band's third full-length is due out in the spring of 2006.
This Santa Barbara band may look like The Jam, but they sound like surf punks with English degrees. Named after seven lesbians who lived across the hall from singer-guitarist Tim Pagnotta and dubbed themselves "sugarcult," this band fill the airwaves with their own brand of clever wretchedness, constantly veering between hardcore and pop punk, attempting to be all things to all listeners. And they come pretty close with their aerobic, bombastic drumming, nimble guitar work, and Pagnotta's sneering vocals. Luckily, they listened to enough Green Day and Elvis Costello to put a witty face on their spewing invective about dislocation, alienation, and tales of love gone bad that lands just this side of insincere. --Jaan Uhelszki
