Free Music Review: A Promising Foundation
Hit: 4 Stars

Jennifer Nettles, Kristen Hall, and Kristian Bush are "Sugarland," and this debut album by the trio is a solid beginning to their career as such. However, all three of them have had careers long before this. Nettles fronted her own band. Hall gained respect for her writing skills and Bush was part of Billy Pilgrim. As of this writing, Hall has already departed from the trio. Who knows what that will lead to in the future.

As for this disc, Sugarland knows how to craft music that is rather appealing to a mass audience. They meld traditional country, folk rock and pop to make a sound that fits comfortably somewhere between Kenny Chesney's fluff and Allison Krause's commercial bluegrass. The first three singles from this album, "Baby Girl," "Something More," and "Just Might(Make Me Believe)" ring true of contemporary pop country, but songs like the title track and "Small Town Jericho" show that this group does have a little more weight to them than most johnny-come-lately's.

The only song that I have a problem with is "Down In Mississippi." It's an attempt at a barn-burner that wants to sound like Southern rock but fails to satisfy. Nettles' voice comes across as forced, and the song just feels out of place from the rest of the album. If this trio has any shortcomings, it's that their sound is too tight to sound tough.

Give this album a chance if you enjoy female vocalists or tight harmonies in the Diamond Rio vein. Also, if you're a fan of commercially cranked out country like Rascal Flatts, this album has plenty of that too.

Free Music Review: Lynyrd Skynyrd with a dose of Estrogen
Hit: 5 Stars

This is country rock that sounds fresh and fun. Is it going to change the world....no. Is it something you can put in when you are feeling down that will make you smile, tap your foot, and get you to do the two-step across your kitchen...yes.

This album has great energy, great vocals, great guitar and that kind of Southern boogie that was immortalized by Skynyrd, Molly Hatchett, 38 Special. Don't be fooled though; the instrumentation is much more acoustic than those bands. There is a lot of fiddle, steel guitar, and even some mandolin. The thing I like the most are the lead vocals. Great attitude; this lady is strong and a survivor. She may sit down in a corner for a couple of minutes cryin', but she's gonna get right back on her feet and face life. Like I said, it aint gonna change the world, but it will make it seem brighter and better and after it's over, you will have a smile on your face.

It is great to see a band like this being fronted by a woman. Hopefully, there will be more because having a woman sing this music gives it a new perspective. The band is extremely tight; they obviously have played a lot of juke joints and have a blast making music togehter. There is a chemistry there that is apparant even in the studio.

Cowboy boots are optional attire when listening to this!

This is their best album so far. I really enjoy it and will keep watching for others to come out.

Free Music Review: A Great Country-Rock Album
Hit: 5 Stars

The only criticism of this CD I can make is that I wouldn't have ended it with "Stand Back Up." So I may re-order the material, and burn it to a disc.

But otherwise, mavelous. Nettles has a great voice, the songs are good-to-excellent, and the band performs well as individuals and as a group. Buy it, especially since Kristen Hall is leaving the group, so there won't be any future albums with this trio.
