Like so many others, my prior exposure was via Repo Man. Well, some 25 years or more later, I bought this record by sheer accident at a pawn shop. (Also for full price on Amazon just bought Circle Jerks 'Group Sex', which I'm pleased to report stands the test of time; a slam down memory lane.) What a discovery. As great as is 'Institutionalized,' S.T. is hardly a one-hit wonder. All of the other songs on this record are punk perfection, intense, but musical and topical. (I shot Reagan!) If they'd kept this lineup together, they would have eclipsed Dead Kennedys and would be the U.S. answer to the Clash. But I suppose Punk was dying by the early '80s when they hit the scene, so it's best to go out in style before they devolved into metal. The Wikipedia entry is fascinating. Seems like anyone with a guitar in L.A. has been in this band. Anyhow, I'm so totally impressed. In high school I listened to a lot of Clash, Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, Bowie, Talking Heads, Kraftwerk, Hypstyrz (here's my plug - best SST classic Minneapolis garage punk band you've never heard of -- BUY IT before it goes out of print, you imbeciles). Anyhow, I digress. This S.T. album should be on anyone's top 100 rock and roll albums, and certainly top 20 of punk albums. |
