That was my first reaction reading the track list of this album in the music store. I think I may actually have said it out loud. Sumi Jo sings musical theater! What is the world coming to. Okay, so obviously musical theater isn't exactly my favorite genre, but of course, being a fan of Sumi Jo, I bought the album and gave it a (hopefully unbiased) listen. I was very surprised. Usually, when you hear opera singers singing musical theater, especially non-English speaking singers, they sound like--well, like opera singers singing musical theater with an accent. But Sumi Jo has it down, and while vestiges of her Korean accent come through every now and then, it's not enough to detract from the sound, and in fact adds a little individuality to the piece. The pieces chosen for the album are generally not worn-out, overdone selections that we've all heard ten thousand times before even if we do despise the genre, and the few that are, such as "Send in the Clowns," are still very nice.
And yet...
Despite the singer's rather timid plea in the liner notes to forget about her past accomplishments when listening to this album, I can't help doing just that. To hear one of the century's greatest coloratura sopranos belting out E's in chest voice is enough to make me cringe, not because of the sound itself, but just because I know she can hit a beautiful pianissimo high C and above that with such purity. The only thing recognizable about her voice is her sometimes twittery vibrato, which was never one of her greatest assets anyway.
However, if she wants to release an album of some of her favorite songs, as she claims in the booklet, then I applaud her courage in doing so.
