Free Music Notes for Ghosts of the Great HighwayFree Music Review: So hard to embrace, to grip, feel, grasp, or support Hit: 5 Stars
This is an amazing, stellar album in every way. Each track shines with the effervescence of an inexact, prefigured vortex. On and on, the drone of a strummed acoustic guitar and the catastrophic, contemporary voice of Mark Kozelek and his cohorts, his allies and colleagues, drips sweetly with the reminiscence of a dusky, mellow afterglow. With great perfidiousness, and accuracy and aplomb, Sun Kil Moon operate the luster and contingent calmness of each devastating track as it floats effortlessly down wings of angelic sound, tone, and sonance. Unlike ersatz folk strums of late, Sun Kil Moon's harmonious hum revels in the fragrant, taciturn calmness of a unique, crafted, distinguished physical sphere. Celebrate its constitution, its provocative gestation.
Free Music Review: heartbreaking, hopelessly beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
It is astonishing that after 12 years of recording, Mark still has so much to say, musically and lyrically. This album is obssession-inducing. I sometimes sit and play it straight through 4 or 5 times. The melodies, the harmonies, the emotion have never been stronger. It's hard to think of a single artist who is or was still making music this good over a decade into their career. Listening to this album reminds you of how hopelessly sad and terribly beautiful life is, it is like a potion which strips away our thick skins and makes us almost unbearably sensitive to the pain and joy around us. It's almost a physical sensation, an ache in the stomach, a dizziness in the head, a piece of glass in the heart.
Free Music Review: a definite 2 thumbs up !! Hit: 5 Stars
I have been a RHP and Mark Kozelek fan for many years. This album might be his most challenging yet... especially for the newly initiated. One friend who is not a big fan --- listened to this album and was not impressed.. stating it was a one octave drone... -- I entirely disagree. This artist on this album is indeed a gem. After a few twirls of the CD... it becomes richer and more detailed and more enjoyable. All who venture forth and buy this CD... you will enjoy it tremendously, in my opinion. This is my first post on Amazon.. to state that while not endorsing repeated buys of the same artist simply beacuse you liked the output before -- Kozelek's current endeavor is top drawer. Summary..... Buy it.
Free Music Review: really... amazing... music.... Hit: 5 Stars
...and not "amazing" the way that 22 year old girl says "amazing." More like, amazing the way a 43 year old male would say "amazing."
I know it's a bit of an acquired taste, and not everyone will like this. I've met a few people who love it like I do, but not many. If you are a fan of music by, say, Neil Young, Hem, Leonard Cohen... I would say most likely you will like this CD. As a whole, it's a great piece of work. It really stands together as a whole. As a matter of fact, I would suggest the best place to listen is when you are alone in the car on a long drive.
Free Music Review: Mark Kozelek is back! Hit: 5 Stars
Fans of Mark Kozelek will be thrilled by his new project, Sun Kil Moon (also featuring Red House Painters drummer Anthony Koutsos.) Ghosts of the Great Highway is gorgeously melodic from start to finish. There's no trace of self-indulgence here; "Duk Koo Kim" (named for, and partly about, a boxer who was killed in the ring) is fourteen and a half minutes long and every second counts. Great lyrics, especially on "Salvador Sanchez"/"Pancho Villa". Highly recommended!
