Free Music Review: Interesting, but it's just not the same

I can only imagine how difficult it was for Al Romano, Mike Starr, and Bobby Rondinelli to try and move forward with Sun Red Sun after the tragic death of vocalist Ray Gillen. Ray had such a memorable voice, and was a big part of what made the initial Sun Red Sun album so enjoyable. Still, if the material was there, it made sense for the band to issue it in some form, and so we have the appropriately titled Lost Tracks.
The surviving members of the band are joined by John West (ex-Artension, Royal Hunt) on vocals. I never cared much for West's Artension or solo material, but I though he did well with Royal Hunt. Sun Red Sun's musical style is worlds removed from Royal Hunt, and to West's credit he does an admirable job. Still, if it wasn't for the band's name and association with Ray Gillen, I probably wouldn't have given this album a second glance. It's a decent enough hard rock album, but isn't all that noteworthy. Then again, there weren't many bands playing this kind of straightforward hard rock in the late 90's, so it does have that much going for it.
Oh, and am I the only one who thinks the cover artwork seems far more suited to a new age or AOR release than a full-on hard rock album?
NOTE: You can get this album, the debut Sun Red Sun album, and the Ray Gillen memorial tribute (which features previously unreleased Sun Red Sun tracks), in a nifty 3-disc set called Sun Set. It's available for next to nothing, and well worth checking out.
