Free Music Notes for Sunday in the Park with George (1984 Original Broadway Cast)Free Music Review: Beautiful Hit: 5 StarsI admit, the first time I experienced this musical, I enjoyed it, though I hardly saw all the genius in this wonderful show by Lapine and Sondheim. The finale has had me crying every time I've listened to it (There's only one other c.d. I own that has ever made me cry.) Though the show doesn't always transfer as well to c.d. as I would wish, it still presents what is truly one of Sondheim's greatest masterpieces.
Free Music Review: color and light.... Hit: 5 StarsThis unique Stephen Sondheim show's main character is Georges Seurat, painter of the famous "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" among others. This beautiful spectacle of a show is accentuated, if not carried, by Stephen Sondheim's brilliant score. In the original cast, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters are breathtaking as George and his mistress/model, Dot. As the songs parallel George's paintings, the lyrics portray the contrasting feelings of both characters. George's love for Dot is equal for his love of painting, yet he expresses it through his work, and she does not understand. Dot sees only that he paints her because she's there, not because he loves her. Songs like "We Do Not Belong Together" "Sunday in the Park with George" and "Move On" will thrill and touch the listener, with the effect that all of Sondheim's music seems to have. The show also expresses the experience of art, with critics at every turn, and the difficulty of "Putting it Together". When the fated pair meet again, the past combining with the present at the finale, the listener will be uplifted and rewarded by the experience that is "Sunday in the Park".
Free Music Review: Sunday in the Park is One Long SONG Hit: 3 StarsWorth owning, a good musical by the master lyricist Sondheim. I personally love all his works, but this isn't my favorite. Sondhiem made up a few themes and "melodies" and created a musical. It is beautiful in its simplisity, but the story isn't the best. It is really two one acts with a slight tie in. First it is George Saurat and his relationship with Dot. Next Act it is George (his grandson) and his commercial art work failing. It does incorperate many of the classic Sondhiem rhythms especially the big cast numbers. Both of the leads do a great job. Patinkin changes his voice to reflect the character and this is especially evident in "Color in Light". I do NOT like it when he barks and becomes the characters he paints, but he does a great job. Berdette is light and cheery in "Louis" and desperate and begging in 'We Do Not Belong Together". Her comic flare is definately used well in the show and is evident on the recording. I did enjoy the musical especially "We Do Not Belong Together". It is a musical worth owning and any Sondhiem collection would be lacking without it.
Free Music Review: Worth the effort Hit: 5 StarsI should start by stating that I love "Sunday." That being said, I must admit that it is certainly not the easiest musicals to get into. It took me multiple listens before I could honestly say that I enjoyed listening to the show. "Sunday" requires a listener's absolute attention and dedication, but the pay-off is more than worth it. One of Sondheim's masterpieces, the show contains beautiful melodies, clever lyrics, and more than a few moving moments. It is one of the finest recorded cast albums ever. Also, "Finishing The Hat" is one of Sondheim's greatest songs.
Free Music Review: Pppppttttthhhhllllltttt! Hit: 2 StarsSondheim, your work is very intricate, very tediously written, the performances were outstanding, and would have been better if you had included a MELODY OR TWO IN THIS SHOW!
