Free Music Review: "Sunstorm Rising"

"Sunstorm" is the AOR/Hard rock project conceived by `Fronitiers Records' management and based on iconic AOR singer Joe Lynn Turner, with the vision of creating music that would live up to the heritage of early 80's `Rainbow'.Beyond Joe, the song writing team features Desmond Child, Jim Peterick, Tony Martin, Paul Sabu and Russ Ballard. The recording line up includes bass player/producer extraordinaire Dennis Ward, guitarists Uwe Reitenauer and Thorsten Koehne, key player Gunther Werno and drummer Chris Schmidt.
Joe is indeed a force to be reckoned with when it comes to AOR, yet the names involved in the project are equally significant; You simply can not have anything less than a hugely produced album with large choruses when Dennis Ward is involved; at the same time the names Desmond Child and Peterick guarantee that the end result will be catchy, filled with mainstream AOR quality while retaining its hardness.
For that matter, the guitar parts are far more intense than expected; the lead melodies are much faster and definitely catch the listener off guard. In addition the mood swings vary considerably on `House of dreams': `Divided' has that nostalgic feeling, `Don't give up' is the song of hope, `I found love' is an upbeat tune bringing back the positive AOR energy and `Gutters of Gold' is perhaps the hardest rocker on the album dealing with the subject of war while the title directly references Turner's days in `Rainbow'.
Overall the second `Sunstorm' album is a flawless and pretty heavy AOR gathering that lives up to the reputation of the musicians/songwriters involved while bringing back so much of the 80s `Rainbow' vibe.
