Free Music Review: There's more to the album than one radio hit.

For me, Superdrag is very nostalgic. Their song "Sucked Out," seemingly about the hard life of a traveling band who hasn't yet "made it," was all over the radio when I was in eighth grade or so. It was part of the post-Nirvana alt-rock scene. Looking back on that time now, it's easy to see that the alt-rock scene was headed in two different directions; one direction was still heavily influenced by Nirvana's alt-grunge sound, including bands like Silverchair and Bush and the Stone Temple Pilots. The second direction was alt-pop, ushering in such bands as the Goo Goo Dolls, Tonic, and Everclear. I would place this album in the latter group, with more emphasis on "alt" than "pop."
If you remember the song "Sucked Out," it is completely different than the rest of the album, much the same way that Nada Surf's song "Popular" was much different than the rest of their album, even though that song is the one they are most well-known for. "Sucked Out" is definitely the most poppy song on the album. A few songs, such as "What If You Don't Fly" and "Whitey's Theme" feel as though Weezer's blue album was a big influence. Yet other songs, such as "Cynicality" and "Truest Love," will make it easy to remember that they came out right after the alt-grunge movement. But if you had to compare them to one mainstream band, it would definitely be Weezer.
If you're taste in music is pretty eclectic and you enjoy most of the music in the very vague, broad spectrum that is "alternative," you should purchase this album.
