Free Music Review: A Perfect Record
Hit: 5 Stars

This is one of those rare soundtracks that can stand on its own as well as being a musical record of a film. Together these songs form a cohesive piece of work. Individually they are amazing songs. "Little Child Running Wild" gives me chills everytime I hear it. It is moving, haunting and exhilarating all at the same time. "Pusherman" always sounded very ominous under it's cool beat and hip lyrics, and "Give Me Your Love" is one of the most erotic, sexy and romantic songs I've ever heard. While the film was very ambiguous about drugs, Curtis Mayfield's songs definitely are not. I know that the movie has been the butt of a lot of jokes (which it does not deserve; the movie is excellent), but this record, along with Isaac Hayes' "Shaft" soundtrack, are two of the finest pieces of work from 2 immensely talented men, and prove that not all Blaxsploitation films were hack jobs. There was great talent evident in many of them.

Free Music Review: Powerful sounds of soul
Hit: 5 Stars

The movie was forgettable, but that doesn't diminish the contribution Curtis made to soul, R&B, and rock music with this terrific soundtrack. It's a powerful combination of grooves, orchestration, and socially aware lyrics, all held together by Mayfield's convincing vocals and tight guitar work.

The highlight of the album for me is the powerfully funky, yet poignant, "Freddie's Dead," a song filled with sorrow and anger. Curtis was way out front in lyrically denouncing the devastation that drugs wreaked on the community, but the power of this song lies not in any lecture it delivers, but in its ability to tell a convincing story of a life lost.

Curtis could spin out some mean rhyming long before rap took center stage, and you can hear that in "Pusherman." On "Little Child Running Wild," he brings in some strong sax licks to back him, and the instrumental "Junkie Chase" creates excitement through his skillful use of orchestration.

This is a clear example of a soundtrack rising far above the film it was designed to enhance. In fact, forget the film if you haven't seen it, but don't forget Curtis's outstanding demonstration of his superior abilities as a musician, composer, and arranger.

Free Music Review: Super Flying High...
Hit: 5 Stars

This may not be the most popular album by Mr. Mayfield according to some music critics and die-hard fans. However, for me personally it represents some of the best smoldering R & B sounds to have come out of the early 70's (before the disco era)! This project reflected the sign of the times with regards to social themes. Unfortunatley, many of those issues have not dissipated even in the new milennium.

Though the dated movie title or name SuperFly may evoke a chuckle or two, there is nothing mediocre or humorous about the heart of Mayfield's material.

Anyway, this album is very reminiscent of Marvin Gaye's classic treasure What's Going On album. While Mayfield's vocals are not as silky as Gaye's his vocal ability still delivers and conveys the very essence and emotional meaning behind the words ! Still, this is one gem worth owning in any record or c.d. collection. The c.d. version contains an interview/radio ad spotlight along with previously unreleased versions of the other tracks never released on vinyl.

To show how this artist is still very much a part of the entertainment industry's strong influences movies like Armageddon and recording artists such as Mary J. Blige have implemented his material for their projects.

Free Music Review: A gem of a soundtrack
Hit: 5 Stars

Every song on this cd/album is great. The genius of this project is up there with Marvin's - What's going on and Stevie's - Song's in the key of life.
