Free Music Notes for Superfly (1972 Film)Free Music Review: HE'S YOUR PUSHERMAN! Hit: 5 StarsThis album is a certified. No wonder it's embraced a bit more than the movie. This album is not onhly definitive street music for the 1970's but for many generations to follow. I guess it's true what Slim Charles said to Cutty when he was addressing him on the current state of the dope game on The Wire(HBO). HE SAID THE GAME AIN'T CHANGED IT GOT MORE FIERCE. That explains the timelessness of this album because no matter how many new rules or people come into the dope game year after year it's still the same. As long as it's still cats on the grind(pushin' dope) in every hood around world, this album will never lose it's relevance. The superfly soundtrack represents depictions of a drug dealers lifestyle down to a tee.
What I love about this album is that it manages to clearly capture the true essence of street life without the bragdaccio of Gangster Rap nor the preachiness of Afrocentric Rap of the late 80's and early 90's. Instead it balances both without drifting too deep into one dimension while. Even when Curtis gets a bit heavy handed with his anti drug message(No Thing On Me-Cocaine song) the music still has a authenic feel. All in All this soundtrack is Superfly and if you lose out on this masterpiece, don't ask no questions why!
Free Music Review: A helluva soundtrack Hit: 5 StarsI've never seen the film, but I can't count the number of times I've listened to this soundtrack. Curtis Mayfield did a lot more with funk music here than just deliver a danceable beat. This music expresses anger, sadness, and just plain coolness. One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.
Free Music Review: Ouch! Hit: 5 StarsThis one will hit you. If it's not the waa waa guitar, it's the killer basslines. If it's not the killer basslines, it's the jungle drums in the background. If it's not the crazy jungle drums, it's the incredible socially relevant lyrics. This set came out a good 15 years before I was born, but I can still relate to the problems presented tracks like "Freddie's Dead" and "Pusherman". This album is a classic, ridiculously good. Hats off to the late, great Curtis Mayfield on this one.
Free Music Review: GET THE DELUXE EDITION INSTEAD! Hit: 4 StarsThe Deluxe 25th Anniversary Edition has an extra CD of unreleased material. Unlike most "bonus disks," which are pure filler, this one is definitely worthwhile. The instrumentals and demos are great. I think I listen to the extra disk more than the original soundtrack! Believe me, you will regret not getting the deluxe edition.
Free Music Review: Curtis is the Pusherman of uncut dope music! Hit: 5 StarsWhat words can be used to fully describe and convey the awesome genius that is Curtis Mayfield's Superfly album, one of the Must Own records of soul?Having led The Impressions for a decade, Curtis stepped into his solo career with two incredible albums, 1970s `Curtis' and 1971s `Roots'. However, providing the soundtrack for this blaxploitation film obviously lit a creative fire in the man that has never been equalled. Full of atmospheric arrangements and some of the most memorable and classic grooves and riffs ever constructed, Superfly is the greatest R&B album of all time. From start to finish, the listening pleasure never lets up. `Little Child Running Wild' is my eternal classic Curtis cut, while joints like 'Pusherman' and 'Freddies Dead' fonk HARD! but the title track and all the other numbers are also hitting in a major way. Not much else new can be said about this album, so I'll just reiterate, this is Must Own material from a True Genius. Seek out the original, not a re-release with 'bonus' clutter that Curtis left on the cutting room floor.
