Free Music Notes for Superfly (1972 Film)Free Music Review: ONE OF THE GREATEST FUNK SOUNDTRACKS EVER MADE Hit: 5 StarsTHOUGH I HAVE NEVER SEEN THE FILM SUPERFLY, AFTER HEARING THE SOUNDTRACK I FEEL I KNOW THE FILM LIKE THE BACK OF MY HAND. CURTIS MAYFIELD IS A GENIUS WHOSE MUSIC TRANSCENDS GERNERATIONS. I COULD LISTEN TO THIS SOUNDTRACK A MILLION TIMES IN A DAY AND NEVER TIRE FROM IT. EACH SONG DEALS WITH A SPECIFIC MOOD OR CHARACTER IN THE FILM GIVING THE SOUNDTRACK A VERY INTIMATE FEELING. AN ESSENTIAL FUNK MASTERPEICE
Free Music Review: Curtis' Best Hit: 5 StarsIt's hard to believe that my father bought this album 20 something years ago and I still love it. Curtis best tracks on this album are pusherman, freddie's dead, superfly, and little child runnin' wild. A collector's item.
Free Music Review: Best Soundtrack ever Hit: 5 StarsThis is no doubt the best soundtrack ever. This album was part of one of the best movies ever made as well.
Free Music Review: "Don't be mislead, just think of Fred" Hit: 4 StarsAfter Marvin Gaye's 1971 classic, What's Going On, a new sense of social awareness developed in soul music. One of the best aftershocks of What's Going On was Superfly, a 1972 release from former Impression, Curtis Mayfield. Unlike Gaye, who confronted a prism of social issues, Mayfield has his eyes set on the inner cities and the criminal world infused in it. Being a middle-class, white male, I did not exactly relate to Mayfield's elegant words, but I certainly felt them. Superfly is an album of such strong conviction, remarkable poetry and masterful imagery that it could take any audience into the ghetto and allow them to vicariously experience that world's tragedy ("Freddie's Dead," "Little Child, Runnin Wild), corruption ("Pusherman") and grave moral decisions ("Eddie, You Should Know Better," "No Thing On Me"). Mayfield never comes across as preachy or bitter; he merely seems like an intelligent man caring for a community living in decadence and danger. If there is one thing proven by the post-What's Going On reformation of soul it is that one does not need to sound like Bob Dylan to make such statements. A pleasing voice and lush, jazzy instrumentation are also capable of delivering socio-political musings and Superfly features fine displays of Mayfield's sweet, soothing, lovably prepubescent-sounding vocals and a handsomely layered, easy-flowing instrumental backdrop. As rich as Superfly's sound is, Mayfield should not have taken the liberty to include the album's two forgettable instrumentals ("Junky Chase" "Think"). I docked the album one star because of that wrong turn. Still, the album is remains testament to Mayfield's skillful songwriter, lyrical radiance and superb taste in musical backdrops and an essential album of that era in soul music.
Free Music Review: Super Soundtrack Hit: 5 StarsCurtis Mayfield was a genius, and it shows on this soundtrack. Not a bad cut to be found on here. "No Thing On Me" is one of my favorites, an uplifting, anti-drug song. "Give Me Your Love" is known as a popular steppers (a style of dancing) cut here in Chicago. You will not be disappointed in this feast of 1970s soul music.
