Free Music Review: "Superfly" - One of the Greats

"Superfly" is one of the best soundtracts done in the 70s, reflecting the work of a true genius, Curtis Mayfield. It's one of those rare cases in film where the sound track is so good, it becomes an essential character in the movie. I still resent the phrase "blaxploitation" to describe all of the films involving Blacks in the 1970s. Rather than "exploit," a number of them stood out as representations of what was going on in Black communities at the time, even if sometimes highly stylized. Films like "Claudine" (which also produced a fine soundtrack) and "Superfly" stand up as glorious timepieces of the era. And a film like "Shaft", while mostly a fantasy, reflected a different reality of the times ("James Bond" films) through a different colored prism. These films allowed many gifted people of color --actors, directors, producers, editors, camera men and others -- to work and learn their craft at a time when other opportunities were not open to them. In any case, the three films I mentioned, and some others, produced some great music that still resonates today and showcased the talents of Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Gladys Knight and others to a wider audience. I didn't feel exploited by these works. I felt uplifted. And the soundtracks of these works have migrated from records to CDs to MP3s because they represent the quality product of standout artists that has become timeless. There is no need to play these works off against one another in pointless arguments of which is "best." They all are.

The term "classic" is tossed about a lot these days, and when it's being used to describe everything from Coke to a Janet Jackson CD, the term is shady. But take my word that the 1972 soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Superfly is a true classic. Why? Because 25 years after its release, the songs still ring true and sound fresh. A morality tale set to funky grooves and plaintive vocals, Superfly is the zenith of Mayfield's socially aware songwriting, recounting the highs and lows of the thug life and the no-win ghetto game of hustling. It's hard to believe, but a doom-filled ode to screwing up ("Freddie's Dead") was actually a big hit during the Nixon years.
