Free Music Review: The High-Water Mark (Thus Far)
Hit: 5 Stars

You'd think it was a debut album, being self-entitled, but this was actually Supergrass' third studio release and, I would contend, their best. The semi-focused, college-band bounciness of their first outing, "I Should Coco," gave way to the full-out, punk-fun assault of "In It For The Money," and then this. It begins with a lilting, melodic, and atmospheric entre into "Moving," but don't think they've gone soft: Soon the wall of sound comes crashing down into a funky chorus, and you remember who you're listening to. Sonically, lyrically, musically more mature than its predecessors, "Supergrass" features a wealth of stand-alone tracks, but to discuss them individually is to sell the album short, because it has that special brand of "Dark Side of the Moon" full-length playability that few albums achieve. You don't put it on to hear one song; you put it on and let it play. Then, if you're like me, you let it play again.

For those raised on "Alright" from the "Clueless" soundtrack, don't worry: This is fun stuff, but from a more fully-developed band hitting their stride. The subsequent "Life On Planet Earth" was a disappointing follow-up, but it is to be hoped that Supergrass has a few more albums like this one still in the tank. If not, so be it. At least I caught this ride.

(P.S. Turns out, they've got plenty left in the tank: Check out 2005's "Road to Rouen." Supergrass is alive and well.)

I personally love it, just listen to the samples there's not much to add to what other people said.

Free Music Review: A mixed affair from Supergrass (3.5 Stars)
Hit: 4 Stars

Supergrass follow up their second album with a self-titled work that's hard to place sonically. Usually in every Supergrass album a clear distinction can be heard from the previous effort. I Should Coco was Pop-Punk and In It For The Money was Brit-Pop but it's much harder to grasp the sound of Supergrass and while it bears more than a passing resemblance to its predecessor, it's also somehow different. Supergrass has relaxed their style in some places by creating deeper grooves with the instrumentation focused more on the band itself, with its acoustic guitars and funky basslines, and removed the sharper elements of orchestration featured on In It For The Money, giving the album a very lush sound. This new sound makes it hard to place in a genre like all the other albums but that's not the problem here. There are simply too many weak songs and lethargic moments on this album for it to be considered as good as its predecessors. There's the obvious "Moving," "Mary," and "Pumping On Your Stereo" but other than that there isn't too much that stands out. The half-baked "What Went Wrong (In Your Head)" and "Beautiful People" could have been great songs but they wander aimlessly without a fully satisfying result. And while there are moments of beauty on this disc (see "Shotover Hill"), a lot of the songs really just don't hold together. Even still, the songs that work are some of the best in Supergrass' canon. Supergrass is still a worthwhile album by any measure but in comparison to their first two brilliant releases, it may appear to be a slip up.

Free Music Review: I Love Me Some Supergrass
Hit: 4 Stars

Having seen Supergrass open for Radiohead in West Palm a few months back, I have to confess that I'm now very addicted to them. I bought this cd first and listened to it 2 or 3 times before getting 'hooked'. It's different and strange and it takes a couple of listens to insinuate itself into your brain--after that, you're doomed! :) "Eon" and "Jesus Came From Outta Space" are my current favorites off of this cd.

Life on Other Planets is their next cd, and it is nearly a masterpiece, from beginning to end! I highly recommend that one as well....just ordered their first two cd's, and wish they'd hurry up and crank out another one.
