Free Music Review: "Superman Returns ~ film score by John Ottman"

Rhino and Warner demonstrates with this latest release from John Ottman - "Superman Returns", just how varied this composer can be. Do not restrict this talented man of music with his past achievements - "The Usual Suspects", "The Cable Guy", "Urban Legends-Final Cut", "Apt Pupil", "Goodbye Lover", "Lake Placid" and "Portrait of Terror" --- Instead of a classical approach, the producers decided the score should be more contemporary with interweaving of the John Williams original themes from the first "Superman:The Movie" film, well our composer took on the challenge and wrote a strikingly unique, emotionally deep score with a choral blend --- There are layers of underscore, infusing complex moods with passages of modern themes, very effective and wonderfully original.
Ottman always brings the necessary emotions to a film through his music, which could explain why this composer is always in demand. And as a bonus, Rhino has included selected Enhanced Content: "Superman Returns" Trailer #1, "Superman Returns" Trailer #2, Behind the Scenes:"Superman Returns" Score, and "Look Up in the Sky": Amazing Story of Superman Trailer --- this is worth the price of admission, as three cues from the original master, unretouched and exactly as John had intended.
The cast of "Superman Returns" (2006) is Brandon Routh (Clark Kent/Superman), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), James Marsden (Richard White), Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), Frank Langella (Perry White), Sam Huntington (Jimmy Olsen), Eva Marie Saint (Martha Kent), Marlon Brando (Jor-El (archive footage) Kal Penn (Stanford), David Fabrizio (Brutus), Ian Roberts (Riley), Vincent Stone (Grant), Jack Larson (Bo the Bartender), Noel Neill (Gertrude Vanderworth)...great job by the director Bryan Singer, screenplay by Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris, with story by Bryan Singer, Dougherty and Harris...and Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster the creators of the comic book character Superman, made his debut on June 1st, 1938 in Action Comics No. 1 and heralded in the 'Golden Age of Comics'. The original issue only cost 10 cents then --- Max Fleischer film series is where Superman "learned" to fly, prior to this he was only able to "leap tall buildings in a single bound". It was deemed that leaping would not look right on film --- and even when superman flies it looks as if he needs to make a jumping start rather than just taking off.
In the endless reaches of the universe, there once existed a planet known as Krypton, a planet that burned like a green star in the distant heavens --- their civilization was far advanced and it brought forth a race of "supermen," whose mental and physical powers were developed to the absolute peak of human perfection --- but there came a day when giant quakes threatened to destroy Krypton forever --- one of the planet's leading scientists, sensing the approach of doom, placed his infant son in a small rocket ship and sent it hurtling in the direction of the Earth just as Krypton exploded --- the rocket sped through star-studded space, landing safely on Earth with its precious burden: Krypton's sole survivor --- a passing motorist found the uninjured child and took it to an orphanage --- as the years went by and the child grew to maturity, he found himself possessed of amazing physical powers --- Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound... the infant of Krypton is now the Man of Steel, SUPERMAN --- to best be in a position to use his amazing powers in a never-ending battle for truth and justice, Superman has assumed the disguise of Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter for a great metropolitan newspaper.
Must say that my hat is off to Bryan Singer for making so many important right choices --- staying with the original John Williams score and having Ottman build from it --- bringing back and re-working of Brando's archive footage --- but the real clincher is casting of Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel, an amazing performance that Brandon Routh has turned in... moments that you relive Routh's portrayal into Reeve's performances, such as the half cocked smile and the timbre of his voice, the Clark Kent mannerisms perfected by Reeves are echoed here in Routh's delivery...but this would not work if it wasn't for the theme from John Williams and and the score by John Ottman...must say tis' perfection for all "film score buffs", just as it should be.

Stunning original score for the hotly anticipated Warner Bros. Pictures epic feature film Superman Returns.John Williams's theme for 1978's Superman remains one of the most famous of the '70s, so it's both obvious and a little weird that it would feature so prominently in the score for Superman Returns: Why would director Bryan Singer and composer John Ottman so willfully compare themselves to the earlier movie? Not only does a turbocharged version of Williams's theme ("Main Titles") open the album, but the "Behind the Scenes: Superman Returns Score" featurette that's part of the CD's bonus enhanced section is all about the orchestra performing the 1978 theme. Ottman's own work thus has to unfold in the shadow projected by Williams, which is a bit unfair since, while the new score isn't revolutionary, it delivers all the pomp, triumph, and vaguely atmospheric choirs that are now de rigueur in Hollywood action films. Ottman, of course, is used to dealing with superheroes (he wrote the scores for X2: X-Men United and Fantastic Four ), but this time around he's had to reflect the essentially noble nature of his main character, and so he's come up with themes that reveal even more pomp, pathos, and atmospheric choirs than before. It's not what you'd call subtle, but it does the job. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
