Free Music Notes for Even in the Quietest Moments AlbumFree Music Review: Some of Their Finest Moments Hit: 4 StarsThis was the album that had Tramp detractors switching from charges of "lightweight" to accusations of "pomposity". While such criticisms contain a grain of validity, they do make you wonder about the misplaced expectations of such critics. This is Supertramp, not Bach. The group was striving for a crossover sound that blended the often inaccessible complexity of art rock with the often too accessible superficiality of pop. Such fusions are often half man, half horse, and it takes remarkable talent to pull off an album that is unique and whole in its own right, while managing to remain both accessible and significant. There is nothing groundbreaking about the Tramp sound. Its blend of synthesizer and guitar was similar to that of any other Prog group, from Yes to King Crimson. Hodgson's falsetto vocals were no different from those of any other band, and the use of background sounds from Big Ben to Churchill was a cautious imitation of Floyd. Yet their particular mix worked because their choice of subject matter, hooks and talent were blended to produce a whole greater than the sum of its parts. Quietest Moments scales from bright optimism to melancholic reflection without seeming either flighty or ponderous. Tramp's achievement was neither great insight nor great innovation, but wholeness and balance. Those looking for depth, novelty or intellectual challenge are advised to look elsewhere. Supertramp produced workmanlike music that bespoke fine craftsmanship more than ostentatious spectacle. They weren't poets, crusaders or geniuses and never pretended to be. Their music was designed to speak to we common folk, perhaps taking us on a higher intellectual journey than the pop of the day, but not so far, nor so fast, that we lost sight of the ground. The charge of pomposity probably stems from the inclusion of the Fools Overture track on this album. To some, it sounds vague and its lyrics obscure, but it is my personal favourite among all of their works. Quietest Moments is not for all tastes, but if you like crossover prog rock and are not too full of yourself, you will enjoy this album.
