Free Music Notes for Retrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology

Free Music Review: Nice Retrospective Journey
Hit: 5 Stars

This 2 CD compilation of Supertramp has really been a pleasant surprise. I liked them quite a lot when "Crime of the Century" came out in 1974, and enjoyed their following 3 studio-albums too. With "Famous Last Words" from 1982, it seemed their glory days were over, and when Roger Hodgson left I lost interest in the band.

The compilers of this fine collection have logically chosen to put their main focus on this period of the band's career and only the 5 albums released during 1974-82 are represented by more than one track. A scoop too, of course, to have the two non-album tracks "Land Ho" and "Summer Romance" originally released in 1974 and which feature their classic line-up. Both tracks are very good, and especially "Land Ho" is a catchy song in the same vein as "It's Raining Again".

I had more or less expected that I would find their music somewhat dated, but this was not the case at all. The sound is perfect and clear (to my ears), and it's big pleasure to re-hear their great catchy songs like "Dreamer", "Sister Moonshine", "Give a Little Bit", The Logical Song" or "It's Raining Again". Also their more complex songs like "School", "Crime of the Century" and "Even in the Quietest Moment" still sound important and appealing.

Of course there must be tracks from the other stages of their career on a retrospective collection like this, but only few songs outside the aforementioned period really have the same qualities.

From their debut album the short "Surely" is a very nice song - and a good choice. From the post Hodgson era I also quite like "Over You".

Great to relive the strong songwriting and playing of one of the best British bands of the 1970's.

Free Music Review: Great Collection & Tracklisting
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought "The Very Best of Supertramp" about a little over four years ago now, and I liked it, enjoyed it, but it seemed a little padded in places. That's what I thought at the time. Found it a bit difficult to get into songs like "Rudy", though I appreciated them. Today, I found "Retrospectacle" in a CD collector's store for three Australian dollars (not much at all). I really like how all the tracks are in [chronological] order, it gave a lot of context to the tracks I didn't think so much of on "The Very Best of", and I enjoy them all a lot more. There's also a lot of tracks I hadn't heard. It's nice to have a few more songs from "Breakfast in America" too. They're a great band, and I love Roger Hodgson's singing. Among other things. It's very worth getting if you're curious.

I'd like to give a list of how many songs come from where, if that's helpful for MP3 collectors. :)

Disc 1:

1 track from "Supertramp" (1970)
1 track from "Indelibly Stamped" (1971)
Both tracks from the "Land Ho" single
4 tracks from "Crime of the Century" (1974)
4 tracks from "Crisis? What Crisis?" (1975)
4 tracks from "Even in the Quietest Moments" (1977)

Disc 2:

6 tracks from "Breakfast in America" (1979)
1 track from "Paris" (Live album, 1980)
3 tracks from "Famous Last Words" (1982)
1 track from "Brother Where You Bound" (1985)
1 track from "Free As A Bird" (1987)
1 track from "Some Things Never Change" (1997)
1 track from "It Was The Best Of Times" (Live album, released 1999)
1 track from "Slow Motion" (2002)

Free Music Review: Super Supertramp

I love this band's music it's magical. The melody's that run through their music are timeless. The alternating vocals of Davis and Hodgson are wonderful to listen to.
Hodgson's hammer style piano was origional back in the 70's and has been copied by various artists ever since.
On this album we get all the biggest hits, we don't however get all the best songs, eg A soapbox Opera.. C'est la bon..Fool's Overture,Lover boy,Waiting so long, to mention just a few but this is'nt the best of so that's ok
What is on it are selections from all of their albums in the order they were released which is good.
Also Land Ho and Summer Romance on cd are enough for die hards like myself to shell out for this collection which i have on various other cd's already.
P.S Roger and Rick please sort out any differences and reform supertramp with you both in the band along with John,Dougie and Bob, i started listening to supertramp when i was 10 years old i'm now 33 so iv'e been waiting a hell of a long time.
Supertramp without Roger Hodgson struggled to live up to the classic line up..though Brother were you bound was good.

Free Music Review: About to discover supertramp?

OK I cheated a little in that I haven't actually listened to this new CD yet, but having the original albums Crime of the Century (COTC), Crisis What Crisis (CWC?), Breakfast in America (BIA) and Even in the Quietest Moments (EITQM) way back when, its already a 5 star rating for the inclusions from those albums alone. Those albums were on vinyl or cassette and I had not yet updated to CD, so the current Retrospectacle was the one to get. (I always thought the previous The Very Best of Supertramp was a bit light for the serious fan).

The other reviews will tell you about the great songs, but here's another hint - get the Paris Live CD too. Not only a brilliant live recording, but with Paris and Retrospectacle together, you will have 7 of the 8 tracks from COTC, 5 out of the 10 from CWC?, 5 out of the 7 from EITQM and 6 out of 10 from BIA. Plus you get 4 tracks from pre COTC and 9 tracks from the later albums.

That has got to be the best value Supertramp available. So go for it!

Free Music Review: First class Supertramp Anthology
Hit: 5 Stars

All the hits are here, with a healthy dose of classic album tracks thrown in for good measure. Features mutliple tracks from their best-selling and best known albums such as "Breakfast in America" and "Crime of the Century" and is truly the first comprehensive Supertramp "best of." I was somewhat surprised at the strenght of their early material such as the "Crime of the Century" title track and also enjoy the later songs such as "Cannonball" and "Free as a Bird." And of course this collection has one of my all time favorite tracks, "Breakfast In America" - mind boggling that it wasn't a single. It's also nice that they included the one track from "Paris" (the double live ablum) that was new at the time: "You Started Laughing". My only criticism is that surely they could have inluded at least one picture of the band. In summary, although they throw a slightly differnt pop spin on "progressive rock", if you like Alan Parsons, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd, you'll like this stuff.
