Free Music Notes for Retrospectacle: The Supertramp AnthologyFree Music Review: You're Old Enough, Some People Say Hit: 5 Stars
Supertramp is going to be one of those bands that are considered nerdy in some years, trendy in others, kinda of like ABBA.
But one thing that cannot be denied is the brilliance of this ensemble. The 32 songs assembled for this retrospective are fun, moody, campy, and intelligent. It's rare I find a greatest hits collection that actually has all my favorite songs IN chronological order. But all of 'em here, and more. My personal faves include "The Logical Song," "It's Raining Again," "Goodbye Stranger." Extra credit given for rescuing the obscure "Don't Leave Me Now" into crystal clear remastering. Aren't these songs just begging to be put together for a Broadway show?
So if you're reading this in one of those years that Supertramp is considered hip and cool, start with this collection. You won't be let down again.
Free Music Review: Remastered to Perfection Hit: 5 Stars
Others have already reviewed the track list. I agree that "Hide In Your Shell" should have been on here, but it's an otherwise excellent overview of Supertramp's career.
I want to emphasize the outstanding remastering that Universal has done once again with their Gold/Anthology series. I believe this is the second collection I have from the A&M roster (Styx Anthology being the other) and both sound awesome. You often hear the phrase, "I hear things that I didn't know were there before", and this time it's really true. The pluck of the bass and clarity of the percussion create an excellent soundstage for this music.
Considering that it contains roughly 70% of Crime Of The Century, Crisis, What Crisis?, Even In The Quietest Moments, and Breakfast In America, this collection is a steal. Buy it today!
Free Music Review: Retrospectiva definitiva Hit: 5 Stars
Este disco compilatorio, recopila los mejores temas de Supertramp desde 1970 hasta 2002. Por supuesto estan los inolvidables "Dreamer", "It's raining again", "Logical song", "Give a little bit", etc.
Free Music Review: Great two CD set featuring a couple of rarities Hit: 5 Stars
Supertramp is one of the best progressive bands in history. Led by the vocalists/keyboards of Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson and the saxophones of Dougie Thompson, they produced some of the best records of all-time on the A&M label in the 1970s-1980s.
What makes 'Retrospectacle' (or 'Gold') unique is not only the best-of standards like 'Breakfast In America,' 'The Logical Song' and 'Bloody Well Right' but the inclusions of rarities and deep album cuts. 'Land Ho' has been 'lost' for nearly 35 years, and I've never seen 'Sister Moonshine' on a compilation before.
Overall, if you want a good Supertramp set featuring some of their classics on two discs, you've come to the right place.
Highly recommended for any Supertramp fan. A great set. ENJOY!!!
Free Music Review: The Best Anthology Ever Compiled On Supertramp Hit: 5 Stars
RETROSPECTACLE is the best anthology ever done on the work of progressive pop-rockers Supertramp. The songs chosen from the first two albums and the ones done after Roger Hodgson left were good choices, as were the songs from their 1974-82 years of success. Even the two songs from their first two albums, which were overall more art-rock-oriented than their 1974-82 hits, are fairly pop-oriented, as are the songs done between 1985 and 2002, which is a good thing, because this double-disc set presents a full picture of Supertramp without sounding overly pompous or pretentious. This set, along with CRIME OF THE CENTURY, CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS?, EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS, and BREAKFAST IN AMERICA, is one of the first Supertramp albums to buy.
