Free Music Notes for Retrospectacle: The Supertramp Anthology

Free Music Review: Supertramp Retrospectacle
Hit: 4 Stars

The hits are great, some of the rest is just so so. However, nothing in this collection is annoying. Great background at a party, or on a road trip. You can crank it up for the jams (Bloody Well Right, Logical Song, etc), and just sit back and listen to the rest. Well worth the purchase price.

Free Music Review: The Compilers Should Hide In Their Shells
Hit: 3 Stars

Any retrospective or "best of" collection is automatically going to generate quibbles about songs which should have been included but weren't, and vice versa.

However, to point out the gaping omission of "Hide In Your Shell" from this two disc collection is NOT a quibble. "Hide In Your Shell" is not only one of the two or three best songs Supertramp ever recorded, it is one of the two or three best songs *anyone* has ever recorded in the genre of pop-rock music. In fact, after recording it, Supertramp producer Ken Scott had this to say: "It was a problem for me at the time, because I thought I'd achieved perfection. Nothing seemed to match up with that."

If you need further evidence of the importance of this song, it has been included on every previous "best of" Supertramp collection -- all single disc collections -- even though the song is nearly seven minutes long and was never even released as a single. If they made sure to fit it on all those collections, some of which had only 11 or 12 songs, why would they omit it from a double disk collection with 32 songs on it?

All I can say is this: if you're a casual fan of Supertramp and don't know "Hide In Your Shell", an amazing song which is a sublime blend of artistic boundary breaking, heartfelt and universal lyrics, innovative structure and the perfect melodic pop sensibilities you love Supertramp for, you're missing the very best of Supertramp. So do yourself a favor and go BUY "The Very Best Of Supertramp", and leave this misfire in the dust. You won't be sorry.

Free Music Review: Crime of the century indeed...
Hit: 3 Stars

This had the potential to be one of the best collections of any band to come out of the 1970s. I purchased it on-line without even a look at the track listing, knowing it would have all of the best tunes of their other "best of" compilations and more. While I waited for it to arrive, I even took my old ST compilations to the used CD shop for turn in.
When this CD arrived I took a look at the track listing and almost had an annurism. WHERE IS HIDE IN YOUR Now I know what the real crime of the century is...
The rest of the CD is outstanding, however, the omission of Hide in your shell knocks my review down to only 3 stars. Yes, HIYS is THAT good of a song...
