Free Music Review: We could find no greener retreat from life's machinery" *
Hit: 5 Stars

And neither can I - this was my best Christmas present. Take the greatest girl group of all time (but working in the 1960's), straight outta Detroit's Brewster Projects and have 'em sing the legendarily sophisticated Broadway songs of Rodgers and Hart written in the 1920's and 30's. The result? A little trip to Sixties musical heaven on a shiny plastic disc. Hearing her for the first time in years, I've even forgiven Diana for how she and Berry treated Flo: a voice like hers, as heard here, covers a multitude of sins. I suggest to you that she (and they) were never better than at this moment. And her diction: every word articulated precisely, the timing and phrasing flawless, her vocal gloss applied to great music they updated with perfection. These girls always had a lot of visual style, what with the wigs and Cholly Atkins' dance moves and the Mink de Ville ensembles: dress sense that's held up amazingly well - remember kids, some of us remember them when they started and that was (OMG) almost half a century ago - but the musical style on display here is classic too: enough (OK, there's never enough but hear me out) of Mary's soul and Flo's gospel-flavored grit in perfect synch with Ms. Ross's pop persona. Perfect - pitch and performance - harmony. It's thus doubly ironic that this album - and the ABC special along with the Copa show which was its genesis - is both some of their greatest work and among their last work together as the real Supremes. Sorry Cindy and everyone who came after you: these three were the genuine article.

I have heard these songs sung live by artists as varied as Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Cheyenne Jackson, Judy Garland, Ann Hampton and Liz Callaway, Dawn Upshaw, and Michael Feinstein. I saw the never-equaled Boston Pops Concert in honor of Richard Rodgers' 100th birthday in 2002 and met his daughters there having just heard Audra McDonald and Rebecca Luker and Douglas Sills and Ron Raines (look for it on PBS when they're begging for money) interpret these songs. Each of them brought their particular genius to the music but I've never before heard Rodgers and Hart sung the way it is here. Not many artists attempt, much less master, a genre not their own. Rod Stewart did, singing the American songbook now because how could he sell himself as a rocker today to 14 year olds? Ethel Merman didn't and descended into camp near the end of her career with the disco album. Diana, Mary, and Flo were 23 when this album was recorded and at the then-peak of their careers with ten Number One hits in the past two years. Hard to remember but only the Beatles sold more records than the Supremes back then. All of which is the long way of saying they didn't need to sing thirty-year-old Broadway standards to hold an audience, but when they did, they aced it.

If you like the Supremes, great American music, Broadway, '60's pop, perfect harmony, or just a great listen, don't miss this album.

* lyric from "In A Mountain Greenery" - the whole line is "We could find no greener retreat from life's machinery than our mountain greenery home."

There's a Place for Us Poster

This exclusive Select edition of this album includes an incredible 14 bonus tracks, more than the original LP, and here's how: we've added two more songs from the original LP sessions, including "People," featuring Flo, and "I Am Woman, You Are Man," different than the later version released on The Supremes Sing And Perform Funny Girl; three songs from another legendary 'unreleased' album, A Tribute to The Girls, which was discovered to be unfinished; an outtake from I Hear A Symphony, "All Of A Sudden My Heart Sings," originally from the film Anchors Aweigh, here produced by Holland-Dozier, who also produced seven of the eight tracks included here from another unfinished unreleased album, The Supremes And The Motown Sound: From Broadway To Hollywood. Total: nearly 78 minutes of music from the Motown archives, 26 tracks, only 9 of which have been issued and spread around various collections before. All of this beautiful music comes in a deluxe digipak, with a new essay, detailed recording annotations and many rare and never-before-seen photos of the one and only Supremes.
