Free Music Review: Outstanding 70's Influenced Blues Rock

Back To The River is the latest CD from Susan Tedeschi, but it is the first CD of hers that I have owned. While I can't speak to her full body of work, this is an excellent CD. This is blues infused rock at its best. The opening track "Talking About" has an opening riff that calls to mind Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog". In addition this song showcases Tedeschi's penchant for powerful vocal delivery on the chorus. I've been listening to this CD for over three months now, and I still get sucked in every time. Tedeschi gears down quickly on "700 Houses", a pensive song that seems to be inspired by Hurricane Katrina or some other devastating storm. Continuing in variety, "Back To The River" hearkens back to Jimmie Hendrix with the heavy use of "wah-wah" pedal effects on the guitars. Sticking with '70's influences, "Love Will" calls to mind Carlos Santana with its opening riff. The same could be said of the extremely mellow "People" which she co-wrote with labelmate Sonya Kitchell. The lyrics on this track would easily be at home on Kitchell's latest CD This Storm. Other strong tracks include the pensive "Learning The Hard Way" and the bluesiest track on the CD, "Can't Sleep At Night". The one misstep on Back To The River is "Revolutionize Your Soul". Here Tedeschi strays into more of a bluesy R&B sound, but this is not really her strength. It is not awful, but it just seems out of place among the other 10 extremely strong tracks. I recommend this CD to anyone who is fan of 70's influenced blues rock.

Produced by George Drakoulias (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Black Crowes, Jayhawks) it also features performances by Derek Trucks (who also produced 1 track), Gary Louris and Doyle Bramhall II.
