Free Music Review: A must Hit: 5 Stars
Susan made it again. Maybe too country for my taste but still very very good
Free Music Review: There's always a light, somewhere. Hit: 4 Stars
Tedeschi was a blues rocker in her own right well before marrying blues-rock guitarist Derek Trucks, nephew of the Allman Brothers' drummer, Butch Trucks. There's a hint of Southern hurt in Back to the River that's quite satisfying. Comparisons to Bonnie Raitt are obvious, but Tedeschi has a little more rasp in her vocals. Raitt can get sweet; Tedeschi retains her "don't-mess-with-me" `tude, even on songs as poignant as "700 Houses" ("Where have all my saints gone? / Will they come marching in?"). Like Raitt, Tedeschi wields guitar work that's fiery, stinging, and economical, making her statement resolutely, but with a pick; the slide work is deferred to Trucks. Highlights include "Learning the Hard Way," with its do-it-again, chill-the-wine rhythm, and the title track, leaning on a rip-snortin' guitar riff. All songs were written or co-written by Tedeschi, and most adopt a "yes, but" blues stance - there's always a light, somewhere. Tedeschi turns it on.
Free Music Review: Ms. Tedesschi's Still Got It. Hit: 4 Stars
I knew about Susan Tedeschi and her Blues guitar playing from one of her earlier albums, 1998's Just Won't Burn, which I liked and thought she did a pretty good job on. I'm not sure but, I think it was her official debut album, and she wrote about 1/2 of the songs on it.
Back to the River was advertised as a "return to her signature sound" so I picked up a copy. I had not bought or heard about any albums of her's between the debut and this one. Back to the River is a good solid album which she co-writes on almost every track. The production is of a higher quality compared to her earlier work, probably due to using George Drakoulias (Tom Petty) and numerous well-known guest artists including her own husband Derek Trucks. All this contributes to a pretty good effort, which I think makes a good companion the her Just Won't Burn album that I already had. Planning on burning a CD with songs from both albums on it for the car.
Free Music Review: Love It - Best to Date Hit: 4 Stars
I really like this CD a lot. I have enjoyed some of Susan Tedeschi's past work, but this realease really got my attention. For me this is her best CD to date and most accessable. She may not be the greatest vocalist out there, but she is no slouch and can really grind it out with the best of them. Revolutionize Your Soul is a classic bluesy gospel like song that really gets to me.
