Free Music Review: Good times and Bad times with Susan
Hit: 4 Stars

This is a wonderful view into what is the best and worst about a Tedeschi concert. She can be as soulful as the best of the blues singers but it also exposes her weakness: She just can't rock enough to provide the balance her act needs. She's terrific on the ballads but isn't a good enough guitar player to hold up the guitar playing for a band so they have to make do with her fabulous vocals. She's got solid keyboards and vocals in support, so it's not apparent until half way through the gig. But keyboards can't provide enough of an edge to the very few fast, upbeat songs and the whole concert lags. Zzzzz by 2/3rds of the way through. Look at the audience at the end of the concert when she plays a lethargic version of "I Fell in Love." Very few people (besides the B3 player who has kept the only energy up through the show) are energized.

Put this DVD on when you're in bed with a glass a red wine with your loved one and the fireplace is going and it'll be terrific, at least until you fall asleep.

Free Music Review: Outstanding music marred by weak mixing
Hit: 4 Stars

I've been a Susan Tedeschi fan for a while, and I was so excited to get this album for Christmas -- and overall, it's great music. Tedeschi is an outstanding blues/rock musician, and she's in great form with this recording from Austin City Limits.

I was really surprised, though, when I popped it in and heard nothing but Tedeschi's singing and the organ/synth. Yeah, the drums are present. During solos, you can sort of hear Tedeschi's excellent guitar. But the predominant instrument in the mix is that ever-present synth, and that is just not the right mix for her music.

Tedeschi is so good that this album is still excellent -- but more for the hard-core fans who can appreciate the alternate sound. The recording/mixing wasn't up to par, so if you've never heard Tedeschi before, go with one of her studio albums.

Free Music Review: Not Perfect, but VERY Good!
Hit: 4 Stars

Ms Tedeschi's rendition of "Angel From Montgomery" is worth the price of this CD. WONDERFUL!!! As great as Bonie Raitt does with the old John Prine tune, Tedeschi does better. Soulful and full of emotion. You feel the emptiness and the desire for that reprive. Just great!

Free Music Review: Good vocals, lame guitar work
Hit: 2 Stars

Tedeschi's voice has matured and become more expressive over the years, but she should either finally, belatedly, get some lead chops together or abandon her ego and hire on a player that matches the obviously prodigious abilities of the band backing her up.
