I came into contact with the Swans through a long process. I had long been a fanatic of Godflesh and other J.Broadrick side groups and wondered what it was that they listned too. I heard in an interview that Slayer was one group but that was it, I heard in the same interview that Godflesh was all about extremes. Well, the Swans were also about extremes, perhaops nopt as a dogma but in execution Gira and Jarboe have been able to conjure the most dark and trudging despairs and the most uplifting and beautiful pieces. This album runs the gauntlet from heavy and brutal to lofty and beautiful, both lyricaly as well as in sonics. Fanss of Cop/Greed/Holy Money and the like will still find the album congenial as elements of the older albums are still present in feeling if not force; but as with Burning World and Various Failures there is a transition to the melencholic and self introspective style one might find in the modern Angels of Light releases; heavy as hell but more melodic. I am a massive fan of this album and suggest it to anyone interested in this much missed group. If you are just looking for your first Swans album I suggest this one and work backwards perhaps to ease into the oldder material, but if you are a standing fan already chances are these are wasted words and you already own it- and if you don't, you should. Its part of the "celebrety lifestyle".
Free Music Review: the best holistic swans record Hit: 5 Stars
the 1st time I heard swans was the album re issue of "COP"...I was so scared I didnt listen to it again for months. Finally I got to love Cop...
This album got re released just as I had become a Swans fan. What can I say nothing prepared me. Consistency all the way through.....just fantastic music ...music that has been bled into its making quite clearly.
Gira sites this as his fave swans album....and I can see why...sadly although I have only seen gira posthumously 4/5 times...he never seems to play from this album.....
Stand out tracks definatly:kiling for company(a heart wrenching soul breaking song...which I have often listend to this album just for this song) mother's milk, she lives! (with such great lines as "I just want to thankyou for going insane...you burn like joan of arc purified by the flames)and I am the sun.....but there isnt really 1 bad track here...hence consistency.....though sometimes the live xtra track of I am the sun can grate....but otherwise PURRRfection....

Free Music Review: The closest thing to LSD in music Hit: 5 Stars
This is honestly some of the trippiest, most erotic music I've heard in my life. The Swans draw on a whole host of emotions throughout this album. I've danced to this music, dreamed to it, made love to it, driven across the country with it, and even meditated to it. Songs range from dark and gothic (Celebrity Lifestyle) to bright and a bit like bellydancing music (In) to Indian-influenced rock (I Am the Sun) to the brooding bass-driven march-like dance (Telepathy).
If you like pop music, hip-hop, or country, stay away from this album. It's too complex for your tastes and you'll probably just think it's weird. If experimental, trippy, and especially eastern influenced music is your forte, get this. You'll be better off for it.
Free Music Review: Just another stunning work from Swans. Hit: 5 Stars
As another masterpiece from Swans it really is kind of difficult giving a review without saying what others have already said. 1 Word could describe it 'Cerebral' It's in your head. The music sounds like it's from a dream or maybe a bad memory. The mind of an amnesiac possibly. It can be so heavy and so beautiful words do not do it justice. The spaced out Rock of 'I Am The Sun' really gives a good mood to the album, but 'She Lives' really lets you know that this is Swans we're talking about, very moody, very surreal music.
Top 3 Tracks:
1.Killing for Company
2.Mother/Father
3.She Lives

Free Music Review: Where did this album come from? Hit: 5 Stars
This is unlike anything in SWANS entire catalog and by far the most accessible and infectious. One listen and you will be addicted to this strange new sound. There isn't really anything to say about Anihilator that hasn't already been said in these reviews. I'll just add this: a largely unknown alternative rock treasure from a pioneering band whose influence can be felt across many genres of contemporary music. See my SWANS listmania for more details. Highest accolades for The Great Anihilator, it never gets old and it never ceases to amaze me.
