I jsut reviewed the Great Annhilator, so lets do this one as well. This is a collection of previously released material, it is in similar vein to TGA; but it does encompase the more hard hitting elements of the older Swans which TGA does not focus on. the song HER for example starts off with more acoustic sounds and a vocal style Michael Gira is well known for, a very beautiful one and nearing the halfway point of the song it explodes into organized fantastic chaos. The 2 disc set is a great album to have as both the Red and Black covers of Joy Divisions "Love will tear Us apart" are present and great songs, like my personal fave "Blind" and "Goddamn the Sun" are also on it. The set is not happy music, and though TGA had "Blood Promise", a song which coul;d be taken as almost an acceptance of some sort of religious redemption, I have never gotten that feeling from Various; in fact there is a nagging sense of fatalism in this collection beauty that I find irreistable. I ahve owned numerous copies of this album on cassettes, cd's and now on MP3 format as the previous copies always degenerate from over use. Well worth the price, and if you liked New Mother by Michael Gira's "Angel's of Light", especially the first 4-6 tracks, then I highly suggest this, you wont be displeased.
