Free Music Notes for Sweeney Todd (2005 Broadway Revival Cast)Free Music Review: Excellent production and CD even with the cuts Hit: 5 Stars
Just had to clarify. Several people have mentioned that the CD is missing numbers. It is not that they are missing from the CD, they have just been cut from the production. In paring down the cast and orchestra, and setting it in asylum, some scenes and numbers had to be cut when the show played in London. Sondheim was a part of the rehearsal process when the show was brought to New York and has approved of the cuts and has even helped with the re-orchestrations and written new lyrics.
So while this may not be the definitive recording of Sweeney Todd, it is the full recording of the current revival. And I can't say enough good things. I was never a huge fan of the original, but I AM a fan of LuPone and Cerveris so I bought this recording and have now fallen in love with the show. Don't miss it.
Free Music Review: You'll never forget it if you went to go see it! Hit: 5 Stars
I went to go see this play in New York when it was previewing! I couldn't belive it that it was back on broadway after sixteen years. We were walking around New York and I looked down one of the streets and I screamed with joy! I never saw this show in my whole in tire life. I listened to the new cast and it was amazing. The show is amazing as well. I'll never forget it! Mr. Cerveris is just amazing as the demon barber and Mrs.LuPone is just amazing as him. They were so great I wanted to leave my seat and go and give them a big huge Hug...but that will be a big problem! This was once in a life time for me! I will want to go see this show again and again as I did with Phantom. Sweeney Todd will give you chills after you saw it. Don't forget to go see it. Sweeney Told me to tell you get your cd today.
Free Music Review: Best Recording I Have Ever Heard Hit: 5 Stars
The orchestrations are breathtaking. The cast members act, sing, and play instruments! What talent! Michael Cerveris is phenomenal! Patti LuPone is amusing and wonderful as always as Sweeney's pie shop sweetie. Manoel Felciano is heartbreaking as Tobey, performing the best rendition of "Not While I'm Around" that i have ever heard. Lauren Molina is equally talented as she brings a delicate, yet exotic soprano to the beautiful character of Joanna. I am so happy that i had the pleasure of seeing this in New York and meeting this ever-so-talented cast. How come they left out some of the dialogue/music towards the end? They did not include the Parlor Songs or Tobey in the bakehouse on this recording. Oh well, the music they do give us is positively spectaculer. I love Sweeney Todd!!!!!
Free Music Review: Completely captures the stage experience Hit: 5 Stars
Having splurged on seeing the show twice in its first month, after being riveted on first viewing, I was avidly anticipating this release and am happy to report that the recording captures the mood and spirit completely. The wonderfully spare instrumentation is a character of its own and the sublime lyrics are both enunciated with clarity and colored by the musical shadings and the committed performances. Michael Cerveris intensity and Patti LuPone's clucky warmth shine right through, and the extremely talented and charismatic Manoel Felciano doesn't disappoint on record. Perhaps some of the other singer/musicians aren't as vocally "polished" as those in the Lansbury version, but this is part and parcel of the ragged edges of this staging, which no one visiting NYC should miss.
Free Music Review: LIKE YOU WERE THERE.......I WAS! Hit: 5 Stars
I saw the original Sweeney Todd in Chicago 20 some odd years ago in Chicago with Angela Landsbury and George Hearn. It was a great production, although I have to admit, I didn't fully appreciate the music and genius of Stephen Sondheim at the time.
I was fortunate enough to catch the revival production the week before it closed in New York. I knew it would be something special with Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris in the lead roles. It (and they) turned out to be VERY special, and the whole cast was absolutely outstanding.
This CD has the whole cast intact and is brilliant. I may live on the West Coast, but this recording takes me back to that very special night in the Eugene O'Neill Theater in New York City every time I listen!
