Free Music Review: If you are a fan of this show, you must have this version
Hit: 5 Stars

So I was lucky enough to see this live on Broadway. What a treat to see the entire show distilled down to a small cast, all playing their instruments LIVE while singing. Not everyone loved it, but most did. The effect was chilling, it created a rawness to each performance. Patti LuPone is astonishing doing a masterful job of handling the nuances of such a pitiful yet hideous character while at the same time attacking the music perfectly. And Michael Cerevis's voice blows Johnny Depp away. In fact the entire cast are extremely talented singers and musicians. I personally love this adaptation, I only wish it was available on DVD. But then that is the whole point of live performance, you have to catch it while you can. Highly recommend.

Free Music Review: Bloody Buckets of Fun!
Hit: 5 Stars

Amazing, eerie reworking of the classic score! It adds such a great scare factor.
The cast is also breathtaking. Michael Cerveris is phenonemal as the demon barber himself (his 'Epiphany' is chillingly good) and Patti LuPone delights once more as the wicked Mrs. Lovett. Newcomer Mano Felciano is perfect as Tobias Ragg, with his smooth, beautiful voice he is wonderful in 'Not While I'm Around'. Lauren Molina (Johanna) and Ben Magnuson (Anthony) are both very cute and very good in their roles. The original is terrible compared to this one! The cast is fantastic, and the new arrangements are creepy and deliciously terrifying!

We bought this cast album after seeing it in New York last month. I love the original cast album with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn, and at first resisted the idea of Patti LuPone as Mrs. Lovett (saw her perform in the role in San Francisco a few years ago and wasn't totally blown away) but in this production, she has totally mastered the part and makes it her own. Michael Cerveris is fabulous, and all the other players sing beautifully as well (best version of "Green Finch and Linnet Bird" that I've heard). The stripped-down music works very well indeed, and is even more impressive when you consider the multi-tasking the cast had to do. A winner.

Free Music Review: Sweeney as it was meant to be
Hit: 5 Stars

Let's face it: Sweeney is more operetta than Broadway musical, and this production of Sweeney captures that perfectly. What's really nice is that with the scaled-down orchestra, Sondheim's great lyrics come through loud and clear. By the way, one reviewer mentioned that this is the full recording of the current revival, but I don't think that's true: the scene in which Pirrelli blackmails Sweeney and then Sweeney murders him is gone, and it's a key scene because Pirrelli is Sweeney's first victim. It would be nice to see Sweeney recorded as operas are recorded: full version, no cuts.

Free Music Review: Wonderful and full of taste!
Hit: 5 Stars

I am currently rehearsing for a performance of Sweeney Todd in Spain, so I have become an 'expert' in this play. Though some of the songs have been cut for this CD release, including most of the 'optional' material (beggar's lullaby, the tower of bray, parts from the contest), I think this is the most interesting Sweeney recording ever.

Patti LuPone is just wonderful, Cerveris is the most accomplishing Todd in 'My friends', the adaptation of the orchestration is superb. A must hear -and see, if possible- to all fans of the world of musicals!
