Brilliant, intimate version of the Sondheim masterwork - a superb record of the 2005 Broadway revival directed by John Doyle. In this production the small cast also performs the music, superbly and imaginatively orchestrated by Sarah Travis. This Sweeney features wonderful vocal acting by the excellent cast and is dripping with atmosphere and drama, beautifully recorded.Free Music Review: A Must HAVE

Patti LuPone is amazing as is Michael Cerveris. Sondheim is fantastic, but I always love him. It is definitely different from the movie, so buyer beware if you're buying for someone who loves the movie. I personally love this version better! It's amazing to think that the cast not only sang, but played the instruments throughout. A great cast album and great play to see.Free Music Review: A Bloody Good Time

With Patti LuPone's emotive vocals and Michael Cerveris's ground-shaking bass, it's no wonder that the soundtrack alone could give you chills. This adaptation of Sondheim's thriller Sweeney is both raw and refined...the raw emotions, snarky undertones, and intricate music will leave you in awe and wary of barbers and meat pies. I love it! I have never heard the original so all these songs are new to me. But regardless, I have only owned this recording for a couple of days and I adore it instantly. The music is absolutely ingenious with masterful lyrics and is very moving and also very hilarious. And Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris are just brilliant. I just love it. You haven't heard Sweeney Todd unless you have heard this production. The orchestrations for the small band (instruments played by the cast members) squeeze the essence from the songs, and allow you to focus on the cleaver language, beautiful melodies and powerful themes.
