Free Music Review: Never seen the movie, never seen the play, still love it! Hit: 5 StarsI may be the only reviewing person who never made it to the movie and who is not familiar with the play. My friend, a huge fan of the play and of Stephen Sondheim, gave me this CD as a gift and it is wonderful. I can take it as it is, not having anything to compare with. The songs enable the listener to gleen the story, and I love the vocals and music, although I do agree that Helena Bonham Carter is the weakest, overall I think she does a fair job. Even my 3 younger kids love the drama and story of this CD, skipping over the swear words of course. Recommended!!
Free Music Review: Johnny Depp Singing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hit: 5 StarsA soundtrack that matches the movie perfectly...and Johny Depp SINGING!!! Do you need any more prodding to have this album in your collection, especially if you are collecting anything Johnny Depp? His rendition of "Joanna" is supreme, will bring tears to your eyes...is there anything that Depp CAN'T DO? This album comes with a small booklet as well. Get your money out and plunk the $$'s down for some fine entertainment. You won't be sorry.
Free Music Review: Beautiful orchestrations make up for so-so vocals Hit: 4 StarsI really like this soundtrack, almost to the point of loving it. Johnny Depp, while of course not being a typical Broadway belter, plays Sweeney very subdued and "emo-ish". I really thinks this works, and I really appreciate the fact that he tries to act and portray emotion even while singing (like in Epiphany), which a lot of singers don't do . Of course, he doesn't have perfect pitches a lot of the time, but I appreciate his performance. My two favorites on the soundtrack were those playing Anthony and Toby. Whatever songs they sing I always make sure to put on repeat. "Johanna" is so beautiful, and some of the notes Toby hits in "Pirelli's Miracle Elixir" and "Not While I'm Around" are amazing for a 12 year old. I thought everyone else did a perfectly fine job, except....
Helena Bonham Carter. Now, after watching the movie, I no doubt believed that there had to be some bias when they were casting this movie. She looks the part fine, even acting fine in some parts, but her singing is NOT NOT NOT NOT Mrs. Lovett at all. She has an ok voice, but her portrayal of Mrs. Lovett was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off. And the crappy part is that she sings almost more than Sweeney does, so she's on the soundtrack a lot more. And I hate it because I listen to her songs and just skip them because her character is just off. Mrs. Lovett is supposed to be big and brassy. If it was her character choice to play her as quite and meek to try and be different from the past Lovetts....well, that was a big mistake.
If it wasn't for her, I would have given this a higher score. But, the orchestrations for this are amazingly beautiful. They are gorgeous in each song.
Overall, what I will do is just make a big mixture of all the Sweeney's. Keep all the songs from this soundtrack and replace the songs that have Helena Bonham Carter with Angela Lansbury from the OBC version :)
