Free Music Review: Splendid, If Not The Best "Sweeney Todd" Recording

Without question the best recording of Sondheim's acclaimed musical, "Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street", has to be the original Broadway recording with Len Cariou and Angela Landsbury in the lead roles. However, this superb film soundtrack is a worthy addition, most notably for the brilliantly acted - and well sung - performance of Sweeney Todd by Johnny Depp (I also recommend it for the lush, well-played orchestral score by an orchestra of British musicians.). Depp's intensely vivid portrayal is truly mesmerizing, and his superb acting is effectively demonstrated too in his untrained, but emotionally intense, singing. Other excellent singers include both the surprising Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen. Even Helena Bonham Carter - whose voice isn't nearly as strong as Depp's - is quite convincing as Mrs. Lovett. If there is anything which diminishes the superb quality of this soundtrack for devout fans of this Sondheim musical, then it will be the absence of several songs, including the familiar "Ballad of Sweeney Todd". However, inspite of this, I believe that this excellent film adaptation of "Sweeney Todd" will be long remembered as the best one ever made from a Stephen Sondheim musical.Free Music Review: Great!

Both Johnny Depp and Alan Rickman have wonderful speaking voices but their singing voices are a bit strained. However; you could bottle Rickman's voice and sell it as body wash, perfume, sleep aid, anything to millions of women around the world. If you want to hear two of the sexiest men on the planet singing together about women, then buy this soundtrack! A big fan of this Musical, however the score is adapted, not favourably. Vocally this recording is a travesty of casting. Having seen the film its sits well within that format, however this CD is sadly lacking, due to the principals inability to sing!
See the film, put up with the singing, for its excellent screen play and stylised approach, however don't buy the CD, wait for the DVD release, believe me it needs the visual.

Not only did this CD come with all the songs from the movie, it also had an 80 page booklet with color pictures and all the lyrics of the songs. The songs didn't abruptly end and begin like I thought they would. They had snippets of dialogue leading up to, during and between songs. The final track was the whole final scene of the movie and is absolutely amazing. It's almost as good as watching the movie again. Emotional and moving. And the quality of recording is professional and superb. An ABSOLUTE must for any Sweeney (or Depp) fan!
