Free Music Notes for Beautiful MessFree Music Review: EVERY S.O.S. release is a cause for celebration but... Hit: 4 Stars3 ½ stars to be exact. I've been an SOS fan from the beginning and every release by this criminally underappreciated duo is a welcome asset to any well-rounded music fans collection but this latest release was preceded by two of the finest Pop/Jazz/Funk recordings ever released, "Somewhere Deep In The Night" and "Where Our Love Grows" and had a lot to live up to.
"Beautiful Mess", after 3 listens, has yet to jump out at me like some of their previous work has done and to my ear Corrine's vocal tracks seem almost subdued or notched back in the mix for some reason and some of the background vocals are a little too brash in spots to my liking but that's just my opinion. I get a "Northern Soul" vibe from most of the recording with hints of Kokomo, Cado Belle and perhaps a few others and the presence of ace percussionist Jody Linscott from Kokomo adds to the over all flavor of my perception of the music.
Don't get me wrong, there's some great music on this disc and it's definitely a keeper. It's just not going to get the rotation on my Ipod that several of their previous works get and if anything, it leaves me hungry for the next SOS release. All things considered though I think all SOS fans owe a big thanks to both Corrine and Andy for staying so true to their vision all these years.
Free Music Review: MUSIC like this is not easy to find Hit: 5 StarsSwing Out Sister is one of the very few pop groups that has developed a style of it's own. You will not find any other group that you can say "Oh, they're like Swing Out Sister!".
Maybe it's the reason why their fans are (as I am) unconditionals.
Through all this years we've become familiar with the sweet voice of Corrinne and with the lush and airy arrangements of Andy. So we will accept all their recordings as our everyday food.
"Beautiful Mess" maybe not the best SOS album, I mean: Will not at first glance cause the same emotion that other albums, but beware: it's so well crafted music that clearly shows an evolution without losing the class and style that we are accustomed to. Also bear in mind that we, as listeners have grown and our musical tastes have evolved too.
I still highly recommend this album as I encourage all newcomers to explore the previous SOS discography. And for the forever fans, like myself, I recognize that we are very demanding with our musical tastes.
Still, if I were to move to a desert island, and have to take only 20 cds to listen there, I will first pick all Swing Out Sister records, including Beautiful Mess.
Free Music Review: Well, here's another fine "MESS" they got us into!!!! Hit: 5 Stars I've been a "Swing Out Brutha" ever since my senior year in 1987 when I heard the tune "Breakout". Then I heard "Twilight World" and that's when I said I had to get the album titled "It's Better To Travel". Since then, I've purchased all of their recordings. Swing out sister is one of my favorite music groups of all time. I love how they re-invent themselves on each of their albums. One minute it's 60's chic, then it's 70's black action cinema meets burt bachrach, along with 60's/70's candy colored jimmy webb/jackson 5/sesame street vibes that "Shapes and Patterns" CD had produced.
The new CD titled, "Beautiful Mess" is one of swing out sister's best recordings ever. I cannot stop listening to this CD. Every song has a place in my heart. The song "I'd be happy" has a positive vibe with it's early 70's motown/dusty springfield/isaac hayes sound. "All I Say, All I do" puts you in the mind of early 70's lonnie liston smith(the sounds of lonnie's brother, vocalist donald smith , would probably come to mind),mixed in with burt bacharach and a splash of late 60's motown lounge. The song "Out there" is a "james bond/fifth dimension" type of ballad. "Out There" made me literally shed a tear cause it was so beautiful. The song "My state of mind", well, let's just say that Roy Ayers will be proud of Corrine and Andy with Roy's "70's polydor years" groove. Shame on the U.S for not promoting this great music instead of this fast food music that they are trying to shove down our throats. May God bless swing out sister for making great music and to let us know that there is a positive light in this cruel world. But anyway I highly recommend this CD.
Free Music Review: the best from "filth & dreams" and the the worst from "the living return" Hit: 3 StarsI hava followed swing out sister since 1987. They are my favority band, the sountrack of my life, but... this cd is not their best collection of songs. Beautiful mess is in the middle of nowhere. It has that incredibles and sophisticated arrengements from "filth and dreams" and the poor tunes from "the living return". Is still a good album, very influenced for the 60's and 70's, more "motown" than Burt Bucarah, but one step behind their best cd's. And almost all of them are excellent!.
Free Music Review: Enjoyable Swing Hit: 3 StarsI am proud to say that I am a big SOS fan. I had the oppurtunity to see them live at the Belly Up Tavern in San Diego a couple of years ago. Eagerly I listened to Beautiful Mess entirely. With expectations high since the last two SOS albums (Somewhere in the Night, Where Our Love Grows) have 5 star material. Beautiful Mess has the live vocal feel of "Living Return" album. It is an enjoyable album but not outstanding.
Here are the tracks
1. Something Every Day
2. Time Tracks You Down
3. Butterfly
4. My State of Mind
5. I'd Be Happy
6. Butterfly Lullaby
7. Sevret Love (You're Invisible)
8. All I Say, All I Do
9. Out There
10. Beautiful Mess
11. Butterfly (Little Wizard Mix)
12. Something Everyday(Little Wizard Mix)
I'd Be Happy has the SOS charm...wha wha guitars and an uplifting feeling. The title track also is a great song. It was nice to have only one instrumental, Butterfly Lullaby. As happy I was to listen to Corrine sing on this CD not one song on Beautiful Mess gives me the high of Love Won't Let You Down, Through The Sky, Let The Stars Shine or What Kind of Fool are You. The closest call is Butterfly, I'd Be Happy or Out There.
The remixes add a little hip hop flavor, with heavier bass and beats
