Free Music Review: Eleven unforgetable songs
Hit: 5 Stars

I took me a couple of days to really get into the musical and whole concept of this cd. Surfing through their web page really helped me to get the whole idea of the band and this project, and, I have to say this, this is the second best album I have ever bought (following Third Day, Conspiracy No 5, and followed by Shaded Red, Red Revolution). Before I bought it, I never believed in those "you'll never press the skip button" records, but after I heard every single song in the cd, it is just as true as it sounds. Switchfoot's musical objetive is -as stupid as it can sound- "to make their instruments as big as they can". I'll explain: How many 3 instruments (guitar-bass-drums) bands do you know?....punk bands uh? yeah your probably thinking about stuff like Green Day, Blink 182°, Lit etc. Now, lets recognize that punk bands are good because they write good songs, or because they have a style, or sometimes just because they're funny, but you are not gonna find awesome productions in punk bands records. Switchfoot is not a punk band and yet the production in this album showed that with 3 instruments, yes, only three, they can make unforgetable music, and they proved that they don't need Charlie Peakock to make a good record. Eleven songs, each one with a unique writing and producing style, eleven songs that show how the band has matured in a good way, eleven songs:

1.- I dare You To Move - A very interesting introduction to the cd. This is (themely) one of the most important songs in the cd (as a matter of fact, the album was almost called: "Dare You To Move"). It is a calmed song with an awesome bass credit by Tim, and Jon's vocals stand out in the bridge. Lyrically, it tals about arriving to earth, when everything is dark and cold.

2.- Learning To Breathe - The title track, is also calmed and sweet. The introduction is awesome, and the way they mannaged they vocals in the production cabbin gives the song a nice touch. It can be say that lyrically, it starts where I dare u to move finishes (smartly placed one after the other), because after the dark and coldness, the sun rises up, and it's time to learn to breahte.

3.- You already take me there - Rockability like the one switchfoot had never showed. It breaks the calmed sensation that you start having with the first two tracks with Jon's energetic guitars, Chad's nice but solid tempered drums and the raw vocals.

4.- Love is the movement - Atractive title uh? well, it IS an atractive song, probably the one where Tim glos the most in the whole record, with that catchy and somehow funky bass. The whole record is itself about movement and moving, and this ong brings it up again after I dare You To move, (but showing movement in adifferent way, similar to a revolution, you know aht I mean, like the Star Wars movement, and the Safe Sex movement and stuff like that).

5.- One of the two that I arguably like the most. A lot of pieces from the song's demo (u know, the obligatory after-writing recording) where left exactly like that and pasted into the final recording, and it gives the song s raw rock sound. As an other interesting title, it talks about how now pop artist (britney, bsb, nsync, all of that stuff) have gone ridiculous now, cause they all follow the same factorized format.

6.- Innocence Again - Probably one of the most catchy tunes in the cd, they gave this song that kinder-garden sound mixing it with dry guitars and even some 50's influences. We've been given innocence again.

7.- Play for keeps - Tlks about relationships (boy-girl) and it basicly says that he is not willing to be hurt again with another harmful relationship, and now he's playing ONLY for keeps. Some kind of a catchy tune too.

8.- The LoSer - Also arguably the other one that I like the most. It's the second place in rocking terms, after Ualreadytakemethere, From the introduction to the chorus and the bridge, this song is awesome, it rocks, and, about the lyrics, it talks about the "The last ones will be the first ones" biblical say. About a loser, a geek, that after being "depleted" ends up being the winner and writes a song for those supposly "winners".

9.- Economy of Mercy - It is a slow ballad, it remebers me You from the Legend of Chin (by the way, oh , man get that too), Jon's vocals sweeten and although it couldn't be say it is a highly catchy song, it will kepp you singing it just for the style printed in it.

10.- Erosion - Wow! blowing, definitly has to go in the cd's top 5. Another prove of the cd's quality production, the first verses are modulated ina way that it gives the idea that Jon is trapped somewhere, and it sounds neat. The chorus is totally catchy for its hidden funkyness, and the lyrics speak about how God changes our lives in a gradually way, simillar to Erosion.

11.- Living is Simple - Your first impression may be: Oh man, this is a WEIRD track , but after you listen to it over and over, j¿you get to love it, and the chorus is so sticky and its mellowness gets you. The lyrics are the cheering up type . (Some might tell, I mean, Living is Simple, what kind of crazy idea is that anyway?).

This album IS NOT over produced like some people say (those people obviously don't know the meaning of that term), it is one of the albums of my life. It is an alternative fans must have, but it has elements that bubble gum fans may like, and, probably even hardcore fans will. These eleven songs Got into me, and I really admire these guys, it's not easy to musically impress me, and they've had.
