Free Music Notes for Learning to BreatheFree Music Review: Switchfoot, the next Third Day of Christian Rock Hit: 5 Stars
At bargain basement prices, I decided to work my way back from Switchfoot's 3 recent LP works to their earlier titles and was very pleasantly surprised. --> The CD titles 'Learning to Breathe' and 'New way to be Human' were 95% very good to excellent. Most people do not realize their cross-over power as of yet (e.g., witness their powerful theme song to "Narnia:Prince Caspian"). Fact is, and it's' been written about elsewheres, truly great bands with new unique sounds can take 2-5 years to catch on, and so can their record sales and reputation, despite a dedicated core following; and I truly believe that is what's going to happen w/ Switchfoot!
They've really got something on the ball, or in their case- the surfboard! They have a synergistic energy with a new never-before-seen-nor-heard combo of instrumentational sounds, truly talented & authentic musicians (rare these days), powerfully creative yet poetic home-run lyrics, and uniquely strong vocals -- therefore, arguably, making them the U-2, or new Audio Adrenaline (or take your pick) if you will, of Christian Rock. So, if they keep up the flow of cover to cover super albums that include the striking lyrics, hard hitting new musical sounds, continue to probe their range (not just duplicate it), and perhaps broaden just a tad those pleasing vocals of their lead; then, all they need do is stick together, write strong original songs that keep spinning off into singles in the Christian Rock arena, get a few more cross-over hits, /ballads if not anthems, and maybe even a movie them song (wouldn't hurt, now that they've broken that ice)... then, just keep touring on & off (as the spirit moves them): then, I sincerely believe, they could indeed become the next Third Day. And my prayer would be that they do some real good with those kind of resources, and become Ambassadors --like Bono-- and do the Lord's work on the world scene, but down in the details. {Because Switchfoot's lyrics and music have been a real inspiration to me thruough my illnesses, spine surgeries, and recovery & physical rehab this past 2 years. Keep up the good work boys. I've dusted off my keyboards once again because of groups like you and a whole host of other new Christian Rock groups out there now, and have been asked to join a local CR group... Thanx--it's all your fault! I meant that in a good way!}
Anyhoo, that's how much I think of them and can't seem to get enough of them. If you like to rock out, you'll fall for them too; and be sure to keep them next to you Thousand Foot Krutch, P.O.D., and your RED CD's. Those jam good n' hard. Plus, next time you listen to them, "I dare you to move" to their lyrics page (web or Cd insert) -if you haven't already- and see how truly brilliant they are. Next for me is on to 'The Early Years' when I find a great price... 'cuz I got a huge CD Collection w/ hundres of Christian Rock & Pop CD's from BMG/S&S, CBD, & Amazon, but never never pay more than $5 a CD.
Rock on w/ a positive message; these tunes are doing just that at it's BEST, no lie, no joke! Live long and prosper. Best part for real people who appreciate music and who don't want cottom candy for Jesus, this type of Christian Rock is NOT AT ALL smarmy sugary-saccharin sickeningly sweet nor heavy handed w/ their message, and you have to listen up a bit to even kinda tell it's positive, optimistic music with a heavenly eternal spin... So, you can play it anywhere for anyone without getting into trouble, embarrassment, nor barfing anyone out. Pretty clever, poetic, talented musicians... and not too shabby for a bunch of west coast surfer boys! --Yours in good rock ON the rock, WT *** P.S. AND whatever you do, sample (and get) Switchfoot's most recent 3 CD's; they are absolute must have's; you'll copy/burn them & play them over & over & over---I guarantee it.
Free Music Review: Another must have from Switchfoot Hit: 5 Stars
Learning to Breathe is one of my favorite albums, period. The depth of the songwriting, musically speaking and lyrically speaking, is just amazing. Switchfoot is about way more than just catchy hooks and a few good lines. They color their chord progressions like crazy. There are always different things going on. Just listen to one of the songs on this album and you will here things you probably didn't notice something before. They are perfectionists and they made an awesome album hear.
Dare you to move - Do I really need to review this one. Who hasn't heard it? It is full of acoustic guitars, a clean sound from the drums, and powerful vocals. It's an awesome song.
Learning to Breathe - Just beautiful. I love the bass in this song and the drums. The keyboard is awesome too. I don't know how to explain this one. It's a mellow song. It's about learning how to really live, instead of just existing.
You already take me there - This is one of the ones I didn't like the first several times I heard it. Now I just love it. Again, listen to all of the tones and whatnot in the background that you didn't notice before. There are some nice harmonies in this one.
Love is the movement - One of my favorites. Great guitar work. The various effects on the drums and everything else are a great addition in this song. This one is an anthem. I feel like marching when I hear the chorus.
Poparazzi - This sounds like something that would fit on "The Legend of Chin". It is a great way to mix it up. This one goes back to the distorted guitars, sarcastic lyrics, and a melody that's hard to forget. I had to listen to it a few times, but this one is awesome. They jazz it up a little in here and the drums add a lot to the sound.
Innocence Again - I love the bass in this one. The bass and the background vocals are the highlight of this song for me. The acoustic guitar in the chorus sounds awesome too. It sounds like a classical piece for a few seconds. Grace is hiiiigh and loow. la la la . Great songwriting.
Playing for Keeps - Once again, I love the basslines, the backup vocals, and the keyboard that pops in every once in a while. Great melody. I'm playing for keeeeps. good stuff.
The Loser - I didn't listen to this one for a while because I just didn't like the beginning. It just sounds so generic. But if you let the song go past that it's awesome. I don't know how to describe it. Just wonderful, mellow pop-rock. I love the harmonies in this one too.
The Economy of Mercy - This song is beautiful. The guitars, and the drums are just beautiful. I don't know how I can describe it. The lyrics are awesome. Jon sings this one like a ballad. It is especially meaningful to Christians, but this song is beautiful no matter how you look at it. I love the bridge "where was I when the world was made?"
Erosion - Another one I used to not listen to much because the beginning was too boring for me. Again, if you let the song just keep playing you will find some great pop. I don't mean britnet spears pop either. More like The Beatles pop (not that they sound like the beatles, but they don't sound like processed cheese).
Living is Simple - This is just one you are going to have to listen to. It is a very good song, but I'm going to make you listen to it.
To sum it up, this is a very good album that will be stuck in your cd player. You will be singing along with it on your way to work or school or whatever every day. I know I do. I didn't like many songs on it the first time I heard it, but I am always like that. I always hate my favorite songs the first time I hear them. Get this one. Sorry if my review didn't help you. I just get speechless when I hear something like Switchfoot.
Free Music Review: Decide for yourself Hit: 5 Stars
In my honest opinion, this is by far the best Switchfoot album so far, both lyrically and musically, and one of the best albums of the year. Many of the reviewers have been critical about Switchfoot not being poppy enough, but that's not really as true as you might think. These tunes are now what you might think of as chorusy (singable like a lot of the D:? stuff), and slightly less radio poppy. These songs are still great to sing at the top of your lungs driving down the road with the stereo turned up all the way.Musically, these guys are tight. Being a musician myself, a find it incredible how these guys can get a great sound with only 3 instruments. The songs are still singable, and you'll find yourself singing them at 3 o'clock in the morning whenever you get up for a snack. The guys have a newer style, but it's not all new. The album is about a 50/50 mix with new stuff and old. The singable, jumpy songs are still there (just with higher production values.) Lyrically, these guys are 2x as good as the albums before. Their songs are much deeper and carry a greater meaning and some witty meanings. Ex- Comparing love to a revolution (Love is the Movement), Comparing the media getting in your head like the poparazzi that follow the stars (Poparazzi), And how god's forgiveness is like erosion, which washes away our sins (Erosion). These guys challenge us to live a day like we've never lived b4, dare to love, and to lose it all for Christ. But LOL, like Levar Burton says, Don't take my word for it. Steal a copy from your best friend and listen to it b4 you buy. If you come in expecting New Way to be Human pt2, you might be slightly disapointed (though not very much at all considering these guys still rock). If you come expecting something new, you'll love it. Hope you buy the new album Jonny D. P.S.----Go out and buy the new album called GLO by Delirious! It's the best album I've ever heard. I have about 60 CD collection, and if someone let me keep either my GLO CD or my other 59 CD's, I'd take the GLO album every time. It's that awesome!
Free Music Review: Genius, absolute genius. Hit: 5 Stars
Switchfoot's first album (The Legend Of Chin) was great. Their second album (New Way To Be Human) was fabulous, an obvious growth and change, but it didn't make The Legend Of Chin look any worse for wear. And now we have Learning To Breathe, and the boys are better, more intelligent, and more mature than ever, while still hanging on to the humor and creativity that made the first two cds as good as they are. How they do it, I may never know.LTB is, in a word, amazing. Not as simple as TLOC, not as excitedly eclectic as NWTBH, it is at once entirely new and at the same time distinctively Switchfoot sound. There is a clearer rock base to the cd. Not that it should even be classified... Every song is completely singable. From the opening notes of "I Dare You To Move", something inside you will say "Oh, this is going to be good!" From the near-choir group power of "Love Is The Movement" to the cynical-happy "Poparazzi", not to mention the ballad "Economy of Mercy", which has a beauty (reminiscent of Switchfoot's "You" or "Only Hope"), every song is a gift. If you've never heard Switchfoot, you'll love the style. If you've been a longtime fan, you'll be happy to hear that they're not just good, they're better all the time. Having met them, Switchfoot is three guys who are humble and genuine. And they're brilliant. And they know where to give the credit: up to the Ultimate Artist.
Free Music Review: A Great Addition to The Switchfoot Collection Hit: 5 Stars
This album is simply a put, fantastic. The songs offered in this song are unique and have great songwriting. If any band out there can change the music industry it's definetly Switchfoot. They send a positive message out in there music. Although they are known as a christian rock band, I don't really classify them in any specific genre, although a song like "Erosion" has a christian sound to it with lyrics like, "Oh erosion. Oh spirit fall like rain on my thirsty soul." My favorite song on the album is Learning to Breathe.
