Free Music Notes for Madcap Laughs AlbumFree Music Review: don't give me that "You don't understand it" Hit: 1 Stars
Over the years, I have heard so many Floyd phoenatics flaunt this album and Syd as a masterpiece. So many consider "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" to be Floyd's magnum opus as well as a work of genious. Huh?!? I am a Floyd fan. Had all theirs on vinyl up until 1986, have their solo works. Having said that, Barrett's departure (although unfortunately due to personal problems on his behalf of which I feel bad about) from Pink Floyd and his replacement (David Gilmour) are the best things to happen to Floyd and it saved Floyd from dying as a band in 1968/1969. Those who say Barrett is the icon and the legendary figure of the band don't fool me. His goofey lyrics and corny pop melodies sound rediculous at best. For me, Floyd started as a band with "Saucerful of Secrets". I had this on vinyl and tried to listen to this quite a few times. It just got worse and worse with every listen and it finally made its way on a garage sale display. Nobody bought it so I ended up getting 35 cents for it (and it was in mint shape) from a record exchange store that buys used vinyl. 35 cents is about all it's worth. There was nothing redeeming about it. The best part of the album is when it ends or when you stop it.
Syd Barrett may have had some mental problems (and I feel bad for it) and a tragic life. I sympathize with him. Musically though, he was a disaster and so is this album. If you want early Floyd, skip "Piper" and get "Ummagumma".
Also, on many occassions, Floyd fans tell me I don't like Barrett because I can't understand him and am not capable of understanding what Syd was trying to portray (as if Syd is only for sophisticated folks). When I say "No, I don't understand, please try and explain", I usually get no reply back from them.
