Free Music Notes for Madcap LaughsFree Music Review: Strange, Sad, Funny and Beautiful Hit: 5 Stars
I bought this on LP back when I was a teenager and was'nt too taken by it at the time. Now that I'm much older I gave it another chance on CD and was struck by how much I had overlooked years ago. This is a very unique album in that the songs are at once fragile, funny, strange and sad. Musically Barrett was very gifted, and the songs are very lovely. The lyrics can be hard to grasp as they don't seem to mean anything to anyone but the author. Overall this has become one of my favortie Cd's and I listen to it often, always wishing Barrett had left us a little more than just a handfull of recordings from so long ago.
Free Music Review: The great work of a mad genius Hit: 5 Stars
This is an album that a true music fan cannot not live without. Instead of exploring the interstellar regions of space like he did with Pink Floyd, Syd instead chooses to explore inside himself, which may scare a few people, but it is ultimately an inspired and stunning album. There is no high-tech wizardy like that of the Floyd albums (with and without him), but there is a simple beauty about this album that is hard to miss. I love this album so much that I wanted to learn to play guitar, just so I could play along to it! A simple and beautiful work by a man falling apart. I recommend it.
Free Music Review: As Syd is the only dose you need Hit: 5 Stars
Few People, extremely few people have had the charisma to transport themselves through time and space. Syd was aware of his followers so extremely that he crossed too far over to the other side. When Syd said "I really love you, and I mean you.", he really did mean it. He is trying to reach YOU. He saw himself as a god, and quite possibly he was. I mean quite possibly he tapped into the source of the eternal universe that is within all of us, and that is why he immediately seems familiar. This album is a testament to a musical genius.
Free Music Review: Shine On... Hit: 5 Stars
I got this cd because I had liked his stuff on the early singles, PATGOD, and ASOS. At first the music wasn't as great as I thought it would have been, but after a listen or two, I grew to love his album as much as pink floyd's. I love the songs Terrapin, No Man's Land, Octopus, and especially Late Night, which is amazing. Syd Barrett was an amazing guitar player and song writer and if you like his music, go to yahoo groups and look up madcapslaughing, which is a great site for stuff about Syd and a way to get rare songs from both Syd and Pink Floyd.
Free Music Review: madcap laughs Hit: 5 Stars
If you are a big fan of the later (post-barrett) Pink Floyd, this album is not for you. Although Barrett was with the band briefly, both him and floyd are different things. Barretts post-floyd is very raw and relies more on the quality of the material written rather than polish (the shape - not the shine). Barrett is not for most people, and by saying this I don't mean his music is for the "sophisticated", I mean its for those who can appreciate a man and his guitar, whose music flows from his soul rather than a studio switch-board.
