Free Music Review: Fragile Beauty

This is my favorite Barrett album and would say that it gives more insight into his fragmented psyche than the others. Even the most simplistic of subject matter when filtered through Syd's perspective is invested with a sense of almost child-like wonder that no other artist can come close to capturing. "Milky Way" and "Dolly Rocker" are indespensible, and many of the alternate takes provide a less embellished setting for some of the songs, which tends to serve them well. If you haven't heard any of Syd's post-Floyd works, they are much more stripped down than Piper at The Gates of Dawn and consequently more personal. The takes could have been better, but in Syd's state this is the best he was able or willing to give. Though I think this only makes the songs seem more delicate and compelling. This is not going to be a standard review. I discovered Syd Barrett at the age of 16. The first thing I thought when I heard his music was that it was the first music I had ever heard that was completely in tune with me. I have not tired of it and I am now 30 years old. I realize that by some standards it is not necessarily "top quality", but, at the end of the day,music is all about soul and psyche, and Syd has plenty of both. It almost is'nt about individual tracks or albums. It is about how he felt at the time, and how his music makes you feel. Sometimes it makes me feel good, sometimes it makes me feel sad. This collection pieces together ununsed songs and outtakes from the '68 - '70 sessions which resulted in his two solo albums. In most cases (especially on 'Long Cold Look') some of this material could/should have seen light of day on the original albums. An extension of "Opel" is the "Crazy Diamond" box-set which is no longer in print. It includes many non-Opel,Barrett,Madcap unreleased tracks. Maybe those should have gone into an "Opel Volume 2"? Otherwise a treasure trove of material can be found on the underground project "Have You Got It Yet"? over 7-CDs of Syd rarities.Free Music Review: great sounds

This music was unknown to me only months ago.Now it is something to go through a day without Syd. It struck a strong chord inside (pun intended)as I delved farther into his world.It takes awhile to love all his music, but even the tunes I forgave him for writing are my favorites today.
Opel is a great tune in itself, and the differant takes of other material I already own are always illuminating in SOME way!BARRETTMANIA 4 EVER!
