Free Music Notes for The Best of Syd Barrett: Wouldn't You Miss Me?

Free Music Review: Marketing at its worst...
Hit: 3 Stars

I can't really say that I'm upset, but I am disappointed that Syd's people saw fit to release a 'new' album that really only contains one new song. It's sad that the record label gods have decided that essentially a single track 'Bob Dylan Blues' should cost US$21.99.

In summary, Bob Dylan Blues is an excellent song...

Free Music Review: He was a genius no doubt...But this is just so-so
Hit: 2 Stars

No one acknowledges the genius of Syd Barrett more than I do...Especially, on songs like "See Emily Play" and "Arnold Layne."

Quite frankly though, if any Floyd/Barrett fanatic is truly honest with him or herself, this collection of solo material is average at best. Sure there are a couple of really great songs like "Baby Lemonade," but most of the stuff just sounds like discarded demo tapes.

Free Music Review: if self-indulgence were marketable (and sometimes it is)
Hit: 1 Stars

I listen through every CD I buy at least once to verify that it isn't defective, no matter how bad it is. I broke with tradition on this collection of Pink Floyd dropout Syd Barrett's "Best." I didn't miss Syd Barrett's songs.

I give this 1 Star instead of Zero Stars. Only because for some strange reason, Barrett decided to write a real song--Bob Dylan Blues--and though it remained unreleased until this compilation, it's the best tune here. It has an actual chord progression, sardonic lyrics, and should be covered by somebody with more than a $5.00 studio budget. Is it real or is it Memorex? I think it's Memorex--or somebody's cassette recorder.

The rest of this alleged cream of the Barrett corpus is Barrett's one BB ricocheting around in his head. He knew (more or less) how to fit in lyrics, and there's an occasional bar or two of interesting music (undoubtedly played by someone else). This isn't experimental music--these are songs by someone whose aesthetic is so wrapped up in his own mind that he doesn't know or care that he can't communicate anything to other human beings.

This can't be the worst music ever recorded--given the mountain of recorded music, there has to be material even worse. Had Barrett been a struggling musician who showed up at a studio with these songs, he'd never get near a fried tube. But his early membership in Pink Floyd gave him some credibility and enough fans to support releasing his creations. I'd rather listen to Alvin and the Chipmunks cover The Archies.

I'm sure this review is heresy to those who regard Barrett as a genius, but anyone expecting to hear how Pink Floyd would have sounded if Barrett had remained on board is in for disappointment.

Free Music Review: Answer: Yes I would, and this doesn't help!

Made in CAN in 2001, Serial# 5-32320-2, Playing Time 73:32

Let me first say that my rating is not for the music, it's for the item as a whole. Why? Here you go: Syd Barrett only released 2 albums, both in 1970: "Barrett" (9 tracks selected here), and "The Madcap Laughs" (7 tracks selected here). Then, in 1988, the record company released "Opel", a collection of alternate takes (4 tracks selected here). As a "bonus", we get 1 track from the "Peel Sessions" CD, and finally, 1 previously unreleased track, "Bob Dylan Blues".

If you're avidly following SB's material, you probably already have 1992's "best of" compilation entitled "Octopus"; you might even have the "expanded" editions of the albums, which contain numerous bonus tracks, or the 3-in-1 box of these expanded albums called "Crazy Diamond".

So you want to buy this for the 3:14 "Bob Dylan Blues" track? Well you should if you're a collector; if you're new to Syd Barrett (either because he was in Pink Floyd, or simply because you've seen references about him), get either of his "official" albums, preferably in their "expanded" format, or go crazy and grab "Crazy Diamond": a complete discography in a single purchase!

Free Music Review: I don't understand what the commotion is about
Hit: 1 Stars

Face it: millions of people die every day. Take Left Eye Lopes, for instance. She was a brilliant artist who defied the norm and did her own thing. A few years later, she died in a horrific car crash. A lavish memorial service was thrown in her honor. Now, we have this dude Syd Barrett who dies, and the press is acting like the Queen herself kicked the bucket. I mean, really. Pink Floyd was overrated and everybody (except the below reviewer) knows this. Just save your cash and wait for the new albums from Beyonce, Paris Hilton, and Justin Timberlake.
